In reading this months Blender Magazine - they are featuring U2. As I read a bit of the article I was pleasantly surprised to read the following: By way of distraction, Mullen rhapsodizes about the bands that U2 cut their teeth with on the London club circuit." "You listen to some of the records now and they are still brilliant" he enthuses. "Echo & the Bunnymen and Teardrop explodes' first albums. Great songs. They really stand up. They had a real confidence and presence about them. I've been listening to all that stuff again recently". So here is a question to you. With Mac dumping on Bono for over 2 decades - do you think? 1) The boys in U2 have never ran across any of Mac's comments or articles? 2) Larry Mullen has his issues with Bono as well and actually appreciates Mac's comments 3) They don't care and just like the Bunnymen for their music. In any case - too bad Mullen stops at the first Bunnymen record. The other ones are brillliant as well. However I appreciated seeing a member of U2 giving a nod to the Bunnymen Cheers, am - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rock, jazz, country, soul & more. The world would be one of pre-destiny. And if everything's already pre-determined, what's the point of doing anything? It's the freedom to make choices, on a moment to moment basis, that keeps the world vibrant and alive and expanding. Example: at this moment I could continue writing this email. I could also decide to stop writing this email, jab a pen in my eye, remove my pants, and loudly announce that I'm the second coming of Zorba the Greek and I want cake. After consideration, I've opted for the former. (For the moment, anyway). It's like, if ya go to a movie, and you know exactly how it's gonna end, and how much yer gonna enjoy it, and how good/crap the actors are--all the details about it, down to minutae, then what's the point of going at all? Another great book about this kinda thing is called "The Isaiah Effect" by Greg Braden. Don't let the Dan Brown/"Bible Code"-ish title fool you--that was probably the publisher's choice, to increase sales. It is actually an amazing treatise, backed by both mysticism and hard science, about the question of God, predestiny, prayer, and common misconceptions about all of these. Great book. --Chris A. I'm a big fan of both bands, although I consider the Bunnymen to be more of a "personal favorite" of mine. I believe, Bono has seen/heard Mac's comments in he past and was initially puzzled and hurt by them, bit has come to realize that they were part of the PR Bunnymen machine. I'm also sure that Bono realizes the jealousy factor is also in play. 2) Larry Mullen has his issues with Bono as well and actually appreciates Mac's comments This is the first time, I've seen Larry praising the Bunnymen, since he gets so little interview time. I have seen both Bono and the Edge give favorable opinions on the Bunnymen at different times. I don't think Larry has issues with Bono and takes Mac's sarcastic comments seriously. 3) They don't care and just like the Bunnymen for their music. They do care, but they happen to like the Bunnymen's music anyway. >In any case - too bad Mullen stops at the first Bunnymen record. The other >ones are brillliant >as well. I would think Larry is making reference to the four masterpieces. I've heard Mac praise "Achtung Baby" which I find very unusual. >However I appreciated seeing a member of U2 giving a nod to the Bunnymen I do to, especially from Larry. I appreciate you posting this, Ali. It's funny -- U2 have (ooh ! I remember have vs has! ;-) ) accomplished more than most bands ever dream of -- even if one were to argue that 90% of their music is shite, there's also better stuff than 99.9999% of all bands could ever put out. And yet it has become a bit of a joke to slag them, and uncool to say that you like them. I wish that people would put as much energy into recommending bands as they do into slagging them. This isn't aimed at any individual including Mac! but in general. Don't tell someone to turn their music off; tell them what they should be listening to instead ;-) ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://bunnymen.nexuswebs.net/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V3 #440 ********************************
