BBC Liverpool's Dave Monks went along to see if the old magic is still there. The last time I saw Ian McCulloch live, apart from with The Bunnymen, was just as he was launching his solo album 'Slideling'. That was over a year ago and since then things have been relatively quiet on the 'Mac' front. It was great to see him back doing what he does best on a warm Thursday night at the Cotton Club, downstairs at Prohibition. First of all it's great to see live gigs taking place again at this venue. I recently hosted an audience with Ian McNabb here and it certainly is an ideal place for live music in an intimate setting. That's exactly what vibe the organisers were planning when they announced this Ian McCulloch two-night residency. Billed as 'an intimate acoustic affair with Dubonnet on ice', if there was anywhere venue in the city you would choose to host such an event it would be here. Ian McCulloch There is no new album to promote this time around, but nevertheless, McCulloch seemed to be on top form. Songs from both the solo and Bunnymen classics mixed with a few well-chosen covers was enough to appease the most dedicated of fans. The Bunnymen track 'Killing Moon', recently given a new airing thanks to the success of this grand song within the film 'Donnie Darko', sounded exceptional even without fellow cohort Will Sergeant. Will was, for one night only, not in his usual guitar master role but Mixmaster D.J. for the evening in between the two sets. 'Nothing Lasts Forever' in my opinion one of the best comeback records ever and you can tell McCulloch enjoys performing the track by the feeling and emotion he conveyed. Back to the solo album material with 'Seasons' a really good track and maybe should have been a single release. It has even been recently adopted by Sky Sports within some of their football programmes. The talk from Mac in between tracks was limited and bordered on incomprehensible, but once back to the music he showed that he is still one hell of a class act that entertains in his own imitable style. Great practice for a forthcoming tour of Brazil, in preparation for a new Echo and the Bunnymen album release.
