Entitled Transmission, the film will be scripted and directed by Michael Stock and produced by Amy Hobby through her company Double A Films. Recent rumours have suggested that the film will be based on the memoir Touching From a Distance, written by Deborah Curtis, the singer's widow. However, Annie Garwood, Ms Curtis's agent, said today that Double A Films had yet to secure the rights from publishers Faber and Faber. Touching From a Distance gives a personal account of Curtis's Manchester upbringing, his bouts of depression, struggle with epilepsy and role within Joy Division. Following Curtis's suicide in May 1980, on the eve of a US tour, his fellow band-members went on to further success as the rebranded New Order. While the film's casting has yet to be announced, the US singer Moby has already stepped in as "musical advisor" while Neil Weisman, a cohort of former Factory Records boss Tony Wilson, will provide creative guidance. Speaking to variety magazine at the Cannes film festival earlier this week, Weisman described Curtis as "a tragic romantic in the classic sense of the word. He always thought that he would be famous as some kind of poet and die in his mid-20s, and that's what happened." The tale of Joy Division and New Order recently played a significant supporting role in Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People, an overview of the Manchester music scene as witnessed through the eyes of Tony Wilson. On that occasion, the role of Curtis was played by British actor Sean Harris. There's a Canadian woman on the Snow Patrol forum who thinks it would be good if Gary Lightbody, the lead singer from Snow Patrol, would marry someone "cool" like Courtney Love. Not to mention the fact that Gary's known to be susceptible to .... excesses if encouraged by a girlfriend. I told the good folks on VT this, but this particular poster *actually posts longer posts than I do*. Yes, I know it must be mindboggling, but she manages to be windier than I am. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 10:11:46 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas For a few of my closest friends > Not to worry Oh do I ever love that Irish wit.
