I had to miss the Muse autograph signings, but did attend Snow Patrol's and stellastarr*'s. Embarrassingly enough, I went to stellastarr*'s instore fairly cold -- hadn't listened to them much despite raves here, and missed them at SXSW. It was a stroke of good fortune that I'd planned my flight out there a day ahead of the first Snow Patrol gig, because after I bought my tickets, the instore was announced, as was a Muse gig and signing! These were Coachella spinoffs, like wonderful remnants of a musical hurricane, and bands that did well at Coachella could get some followup exposure in LA afterwards. It was a great mini-gig, though very loud. I especially liked the female bassist/backup singer; she handled the bass with an ease and precision I rarely see in female bass players, and her vocals are good as well. Bought their album, and played it non-stop while driving (and driving, and driving) around the LA area. Favourites include "In The Walls," "Jenny," and of course, "My Coco." I think I'm going to forever associate that album with the LA freeways, which were for the most part fairly clear though white- knuckled driving. Went straight from there to see Muse. Sat in the balcony and am damn glad because if St Louis was a mosh, this was a death mosh including several people who got on stage and one who tackled Matt (lead singer/guitarist). St Louis' show was a bit half-hearted and the sound wasn't all that great, but the LA show burned down the venue, a perfect Cinco De Mayo-themed Mayan Theatre. There are huge intricate stone carvings and the stage lights looked amazing at they lit up the stone faces on the walls. Of special note was Matt's keyboard playing, which was absolutely amazing. After the show someone with the record company came up to me and said she liked that I knew all the words to all the songs. The American record labels seem stunned that there are ready-made fans here and that we've been dying to have these bands play. They act as if *they* have discovered this amazing new talent -- yeah right. The LA scenesters glom onto the buzz bands with a vengeance and will go see gigs even if they don't know or like the music, like Flavour Of The Day. This can give some gigs a downer effect, as with Snow Patrol's Troubadour show.
