I saw Muse for the first time tonight, and it all went horribly wrong, for me, at least. The venue was 1,000 person general admission and it was essentially One Big Room and the stage -- no balcony etc. I realised it was going to be interesting when the average fan seemed to be an 18-year-old male .... there were few girls or women, and very few people who looked over 30, even. So I figured on the standard treatment from this crowd -- being sweated on, furtively groped, and so forth. Lots of yelling and thinking they are Oh So Funny and there's never been anyone before them to be So Funny. Not only did I get that, but they started *moshing* and heaving back and forth. Yup, I want to see one of my favourite bands whilst being kicked in the head and having 200 pound boys wearing boots step on my feet. It's oh so easy to sing along when you're being slammed so hard that it knocks the air out of you and your feet leave the floor and you can't get back down. Now -- should I have *expected* this? Are Muse now a punk band? Is it fair game to mosh at any gig? What about those of us who simply do not want to be assaulted whilst watching the gig? I'm black and blue and sore and I gotta drive 722 miles home tomorrow. I mean today. Anyway -- do you guys think this is the norm for any gig? for Muse? It's gone way too far here..... there's a vast difference between lifting someone up and passing them around, and *throwing* them around. Big difference between wild dancing, and guys wanting to see how many people they can knock to the ground like human bowling pins. Muse's management, whom I was forced to talk to, but that's another story, said that the band could not control things if a few people were having a little fun. Uh yeah right. Stop playing. That controls things really well. So are Muse really after the teenaged dickhead set? Maybe I've been overprotected, going to only 18+ shows in clubs. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 07:17:23 -0400 From: Red Subject: Re: seven-seas OT: Muse (I need a reality check!) Don't you remember that time not too long ago when I posted saying I didn't feel like standing at the stage any more....not even for the Bunnymen... and you said......"Oh, but I HAVE to...coz I have to watch figure placements on their guitars and be able to see their faces."??? >I'm >black and blue and sore and I gotta drive 722 miles home tomorrow. >I mean today. Brighton was bruise city, and then London too..... that's why Manchester was at the back for me! Two nights of that was enough for one tour! >Muse's management, whom I was forced to talk to, but that's another >story, said that the band could not control things if a few people >were having a little fun. You REALLY don't get out much....do you?? hehhehee Red ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 07:29:56 -0400 From: Red Subject: oops! This sounds very standard fayre for a UK Muse gig at least.. And not just Muse, most of the rockier bands ( and some that aren't ) will attract this type of front rail activity.. I can't remember which Brixton gig is was ( maybe 98 ) but that Bunnymen show was very rough, and I'm used to mad, mad slamming from old punk and psychobilly gigs back in the 80's.. Muse are headlining the Pyramid stage on the Sunday at Glasto this year... Thankfully, Spiritualized are headining the New stage at the same time, so I know where I'll be.. especially as McNabb will be on the same stage before Spiz... You should have mailed me Amy, I could have predicted that audience in about 2 sentances.. And I bet most of the youngsters were all decked out in hooded tops as well !! A far cry from when I first saw them in a 400 capacity pub with soulwax supporting some years ago....
