As Mac has been known for making statements that are untrue (duet with courtney love and natalie imbrulia anyone? acoustic US tour anyone?), i took it upon myself to snoop around amongst some friends in the biz. although the Coldplay tour isn't happening until another year from now, there's talk about a potential travelling festival-like line-up...similiar to what The Cure will be doing this summer (The Cure, Interpol, Mogwai, The Rapture, and others TBA). Coldplay would likely be headlining with a number of bands (3-5 additional bands) on the bill. again, this is just talk and NOTHING is even confirmed. also, Coldplay may likely tour by themselves (with a lesser known support band) once around before the travelling festival. again, nothing is confirmed, it's just all talk, and NO specific bands have been approached as far as i've been told...not even the Bunnymen. While the idea of the Bunnymen opening for ANYONE rankles a little bit, I think it makes sense. An analogy would be if Lou Reed opened for Bowie in '72. (It's a stretch, I know, cos Coldplay ain't no Bowie, but...) Lou was obviously the influence, and certainly more "important", but at the time, he wasn't getting the exposure Bowie was getting (he was still more of a cult thingh while Bowie was massive), and, had it actually happened, I wouldn't have blamed Lou a bit. Ya can't write classics on an empty stomach--nor should you have to, just to appeal to some sort of precious fan "idealism." And consider the exposure. Politically, I'd rather see the Bunnymen open for Coldplay (vagueyly kindred spirits, mutual conciliatory gestures) than co-headline with the Psych Furs, which suggests some sorta equality. (I mean, The Furs have done a few great things--first LP esp.--but really, come OOOOOnnn.) Ultimately, it's about getting out there and playing great shit--does it r! eally matter that much how the marquee reads? - --Chris A.
