Who should I see?! SXSW is around the corner and there are even MORE bands this year that I'm thinking of seeing.... but I need help figuring out which ones to prioritise cos there are quite literally so many! I will be handcuffed to the stage for Snow Patrol (eg they ain't getting me to move!) (LOL) but otherwise don't have my schedule firmed up. There are over 1,000 bands in five nights at about 50 clubs, six bands playing each night in succession ..... whew! The way it's done is that there are many clubs that host live music here in Austin, all within walking distance of each other, and you quite literally run from venue to venue catching your favourite acts. We draw bands from around the world as well as the US. I've gotten some excellent feedback on UK bands but could always use more, and if there's a band from elsewhere I could also use a recommendation. The list of bands is at: http://www.sxsw.com/music/showcases It's quite lengthy, but most people who check it out wish they were coming! ;-) Under "A" alone are Agent Blue (from Stoke-on- Trent!), The Amazing Pilots (Belfast) and Athlete. And there's an intriguingly named Architecture in Helsinki from Melbourne, Australia! Any help appreciated! ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 09:41:48 -0500 From: "Vandenbrook, N [Kzoo-246810-3] " Subject: Re: seven-seas Help! But I saw them in Detroit about 4 years ago and they are really fucking good. If that does not appeal and you are in the mood for some really kick ass noisy jangly music check out The Unicorns. Their songs are infectious. Ok I'll go back to lurking now. One more thing. Henry are you out there? drop me a line man I lost your addy. Who should I see?! Nothing there at all that catches my fancy, really! But if I had to recommend anything just going by what my friends speak of.... British Sea Power (speaks for itself) The Church (if ya like them, i did in the 80's, haven't kept up) Demolition Doll Rods (if ya like the Cramps and rock-a-billy) Southern Culture on the Skids (see above, I have a friend who is mega into The Cramps and Nick Cave and he loves both of those bands.) The Lilys (supposed to be pretty good... they were supposed to play a new year's eve fest a few years back when I went to see Shallow, but they had to cancel. Shallow were disappointed. Shallow are a Kansas band who are also Bunnymen fans) J Mascis (singer of Dinosaur Jr. ~ a friend is big into him!) Tom McRae (I really like what Shaz sent me of his) The Stills (seen them open for EATB and they were pretty decent!) Trash Can Sinatras? (some list members always speak of this band) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 15:59:24 -0000 From: "looloo" Subject: RE: seven-seas arthur lee and love.. been sold out for ages in portsmouth ....& i never got tickets ..... send in a review .... >>-----Original Message----- >>From: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org [mailto:owner-seven-seas@smoe.org]On >>Behalf Of steve g >>Sent: 26 February 2004 22:08 >>> >>anyone else going to see this tour? i'm off to cambridge tomorrow to see >>him. >> >>stevie g. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 16:41:57 -0000 From: "steve g" Subject: Re: seven-seas arthur lee and love.. live in cambridge. here goes... the crowd in cambridge were like a teachers conference, organised by 'saga holidays', but considering cambridge is the ''seat of all learning'', i'm not suprised - arthur seemed dissapointed with the crowd and the seats. the venue was all seated and i was one of only a few who was leaping about! arthur and love were amazing, this tour is a stripped down, band only, no brass and strings, rock 'n' roll afair and in my opinion the songs worked better with the lead guitarist playing all the brass lines instead. the set was still predominantly 'forever changes' but with a good selection of tracks like 'orange skies', 'litle red book', 'signed d.c.' , 'stephanie knows', etc. arthur's voice seems to get better with age and his harmonica playing is awesome [he must be 55 or more]. someone shouted at the end ''arthur, you're a living legend, for fuck sake don't die'' - that says it all. stevie g. p.s great to be back at the cambridge corn exchange for another great gig - last time i was there was the bunnymen 'comeback' tour. oh, and to those who don't know 'saga' - it's a retired persons holiday company [Send Aged Gits Abroad ?] ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 11:58:21 -0500 From: Red Subject: Re: seven-seas arthur lee and love.. live in cambridge. I thought the crowd was pretty lame at the Bunnymen gig I saw in Cambridge last Feb too. I liked "Walk Like A Camel" by them -- bought their album -- Dirt Track something? a while back. A GOOD while back. Hey, there's a "best band/record/etc" contest by an Irish mobile phone company (I've no clue why). I had to go to mon the Patrol, but on some of the others I had no clue, and you HAD to vote on everything, as well as provide an Irish mobile number, which (ahem) I made up and hope the person forgives me. Hey, maybe they'll win something good. Anywho, one of the questions was "best foreign singer" and I chose your Nick Cave cos he was the only one I recognised on the list! I was completely lost on "best Irish DJ". A bit odd to see "best foreign band" list *both* The Darkness AND The White Stripes, but I guess that's correct. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V3 #93 *******************************
