Make sure that you use the "Line In" socket on your soundcard, and not the "Mic" socket as one is stereo and the other mono.. And make sure that you aren't connecting an amplified signal to the soundcard, or as Stevie said, Bad Things Can Happen. In other words, if your outputs go directly to speakers, DON'T plug them into the soundcard. You need a "Line Out" or, if lacking that, a headphone jack. The former is vastly preferrable. Having done this, you would also do well to make sure the heads of the cassette player are clean; I've used isopropyl alcohol with no ill effect. I also find that using the "metal" setting of the tape player, even if the tape *is* metal, limits the dynamic range too much. It's amazing what happens when one reintroduces old friends Hiss, Pop, Wow, and Flutter to digital..... they stand out like sore thumbs! Since your input is analog, but you'll be writing to a digital file, there ought to be a popup window asking you to identify your input source and output source. You want to sample at 44.1 Kbps if you want a CD quality .wav. You can then use a .wav -> .mp3 converter. I usually keep the original .wav around if at all possible, and/or burn it to a CD, cos if the .mp3 gets lost I don't want to have to hook everything up to the PC again! and if I *do* want to make a CD, saving as an .mp3 and then converting *that* to a .wav *will* lose more sound quality than if you'd just saved it as a .wav to begin with.
