The headliner was REM, and they actually went out of their way to do it. Michael Stipe lived for a few years just north of here, and calls it his second home and says it feels just like Athens (Georgia) only in Texas. It was *extremely* well-attended despite the constant misty rain that fell throughout and kept the temperatures in the low 70s the entire time (with 2000% humidity). I was surprised to meet many people from out of town. The teeny boppers were aghast that I did not know who Ben Harper was. One extremely stoned young man stared at me like an alien -- "duuuuuude, she doesn't know who Ben Harper is!" I really only went for REM, and Ween played before they did. I was able to get within three rows of the front during the churn after Ween played. Had to wait an hour between acts, but well worth it. Lance Armstrong (five-time Tour de France winner) had the honour of introducing the band and you could tell he was overwhelmed at being on stage in front of so many people. They opened with "Finest Worksong" -- and really, they could have chosen many songs, but this one was like a rush of pure ecstasy into the blood stream as the crowd went wild. The band did recent stuff, unreleased stuff, and old stuff.... all flawlessly. Bugs in the South: Kristin once mentioned that an opera singer in Houston got nailed in the mouth by a June bug while singing; Michael Stipe got a huge moth drawn in by the stage lights. Wiped it out and kept on going. He's from Georgia, he knows bugs. Other musicians: he started making some comments about Robbie Williams, coyly asking the audience if we knew who he was. There was a lull in the noise and I yelled clearly "Robbie Williams SUCKS!" (The audience camera was right on me at the time, but I'll be surprised if that makes it to the show ;-)) But it seems as if Michael Stipe *fancies* Robbie. Hmmmm. He also made a positive comment about Polyphonic Spree. Must've got suckered in at Glastonbury. A very enjoyable if damp night, and great to see so many bands and fans of all ages all enjoying themselves. If I could see REM every night, I think I'd be permanently happy!!!! And they dedicated "Don't Go Back To Rockville" to Johnny and June Williams Cash; also played a song of his after the concert. - --Amy (tired but happy) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 01:28:26 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas Bunnymen @ Inland Invasion > The Killing Moon (w/ intro of Ocean Rain teaser) > > Ian was being typical Ian with the following quotes: > -- "doo do doo...it's pretty easy, not that hard man, 'doo do doo's, feel > free to follow along" Ian on the singing along of "Walk On the Wild Side". > And yes, the crowd joined in. > -- introducing the Killing Moon as "the best song ever written" If they "teased" with Ocean Rain, I'd agree on the "best song ever written." ;-) Thanks for the report! ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #770 ********************************
