Then I sense some serious polygamy going down ;-) The *band* is a collective singular noun, despite the highly confusing British grammatical rule to use plural pronouns and verbs. EATB is a single entity. Take, oh, the United States. We celebrated the 200th anniversary since declaring independence from Britain. We celebrated it in 1976 -- OBVIOUSLY the same people were not around to comprise the government or its people. What we were celebrating was the passage of time since the US was created. Y'all still observe (or notice, anyway) Queen Victoria's birthday, and she done died a looooonnngggg time ago. Does being dead mean the day is not her birthday? No. So -- even if EATB had been around the one day, and then packed it in, only to reform 25 years later -- it could still legitimately say they are celebrating the inception of the band. And if you think about it, they never went out of *business* -- even when no one was releasing stuff under the moniker, the old stuff was still selling and the business was chugging away. - ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2003 21:40:06 +0100 From: "Matt H" Subject: seven-seas The ENGLISH language >The *band* is a collective singular noun, despite the highly >confusing British grammatical rule to use plural pronouns and >verbs. EATB is a single entity. Excuse me? The Oxford English Dictionary (note: that's ENGLISH, not American) does not define band as a singular noun. However, it does define it as a group of people gathered together for a particular activity, especially criminal or musical (or both, in the case of Rush). Now, to me, and probably to most other English folk (whose language we are talking here, after all), a group of people are not a single entity, but rather exactly what the word implies, i.e. a group, as in more than one, as in plural. Using EATB as an example, as you did, we could break it down, and Echo would be a single entity, but the clue here is "And The", which suggests something in addition to Echo, thereby making the whole something definitely not singular. Add in "Bunnymen" (note: MEN, not man) and the case becomes even stronger.....
