Cock-Rock band bottom of the bill at Glastonbury go on to achieve mass sales, name dropped by all the right people and, this week, damn near the top of the Reading bill. They're being ironic aren't they ? Only us Brits are going to appreciate them for that -- aren't we ? I mean, no one else is going to take them seriously, are they ? (I'm looking at you Americans here) To be fair, any band that has a debut video with a dinosaur mating with a spaceship and the band hatching out of the resulting eggs is OK by me, after all, ""it's such a fine line between stupid and clever."" - -- Barry - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 14:03:34 -0500 From: Amy Moseley Rupp Subject: Re: seven-seas OT: Kerrang! awards/KJ/The Darkness Quoting Barry Whiting : > The rise of The Darkness is quite staggering and quite unbelievable > really.... They were quite the hit at SXSW, stole the show away from British Sea Power, I'll say that much. They seemed very enthusiastic and not a bit ironic. They were having the time of their lives in the role of Rock Gods, even if they aren't that way off stage. A more lithe, lovely version of Spinal Tap? > They're being ironic aren't they ? (I'm looking at you Americans here) You *don't* take them seriously if you think they're being ironic. We *would* take them seriously, and when you look at what we're churning out on shows like "American Idol" they would fit right in and get bonus points from being over the pond. I never thought anyone in their right MINDS would take the Osborne family seriously, and look what happened! I met the Darkness' host "family" (one can volunteer one's house for a band to stay in at SXSW) and they'd hosted them two years running. Said they were very nice young men. :-) I'll consider hosting a band this coming year if I am not in England over spring break. - ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #703 ********************************
