Amy, I understand what and why you're saying this, but I totally disagree. During the 80's, the "Mouth" was a PR tool. It may have been amusing to read, but it was not credible. Mac slags off the best of that generation -- Bono and U2, Comsat Angels, Adrian Borland and The Sound (previously The Outsiders, who put out the first self independent punk album release in 1977), The Chameleons, The Cure, Simple Minds, etc. Since the breakup and he has "mellowed", his credibility has fallen further into question by endorsing Fun Loving Criminals, Oasis and Coldplay. These are bands that could use a slagging or two, whereas most of the 80's bands that he slagged deserve praise. He was in effect, trying to "kill off the competition" with this method. The only band Mac gave high praise to was JD, No, The Smiths, and The Fall. Besides his influences of Bowie, VU and Cohen. Again, all PR in making this the best band in the world but not credible, unless he really chooses his targets well and is honest. Lydon is much more credible in his slagging. Mac could certainly do a great job, if he is sincere and honest Sure, I can accept the fact that Mac and I may have a totally different opinion on music (Slagging the early "real" U2 while praising "Achtung Baby").
