Looking at that page of reviews, it seems like he has only 2 live reviews deemed good enough for publication in the first place, and he slags Rush fans in one, and U2 fans in the other. Obviously a very insecure person having to resort to this. Whilst we all may do it ( inc. me) from time to time on web boards etc, a published reviewer should be a bit more careful IMvHO.. Still, it all goes towards the word count I suppose.. I'm glad I'm a music freak ( Rush, Floyd, Zep, Sigur Ros, Mogwai etc etc etc) rather than a microphone fondling freak.. I suppose the guy is right into Twisted Sister.. Stu Red wrote: At 03:35 PM 8/6/03 -0500, you wrote: >Actually there are several reviews of both albums and >live shows that are worth reading. Some music freaks care only for the quality of instrumentation (Rush fans, I'm looking in your direction), but, especially live, nothing compares to someone who knows how to handle a mic. "What I've said very little about, however, is the actual music" . And all that without slagging any fans of any other band.. Stu Bird wrote: The reviewer's obviously a wanker.. There's something to be said for stagemanship.... and I'm the first to admit that Geddy Lee isn't a charismatic performer. OTOH, New Order ain't either. Obviously, MES is considered to be a showman, such that he can replace every member of the band and still have it be "The Fall." Even Mac couldn't pull that one off. That makes me wonder: what bands today have frontmen who *could* do such a thing? Probably that dude from Polyphonic Spree ;-) (yes I mentioned them AGAIN, Red) One could easily rewrite the sentence to read something like "gig freaks who only see the stage shenanigans of a band and don't hear the crap music." The fact that Twisted Sister is even in your vocabulary is unfortunate proof that a band whose members are all attention-seeking weirdos ;-) who can't make music of any sort -- can still get recognition, while many deserving bands wither away in local clubs waiting for their chance. One would think with the zillion channels on radio and television and satellite and and, that every band who wanted to be heard could be heard, and certainly the Web has helped that (a la what's-his-name in _Powder_, the manager who sat around and listened to unsigned bands' web sites all day) -- but not everyone has access to the 'Net, and it almost seems sometimes like casual music listeners want their songs forcefed them by heavy rotation. "Do not resist, we will assimilate you...." (LOL) Back on topic if anyone's read this far: the rock reviewers should leave it to Mac to slag other performers: he's got more credibility and is far better at doing it. Should he ever need or want a career outside of singing, he could easily do the John Lydon thing and offer better commentary on just about anything than most presenters today! ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #621 ********************************
