I don't know about the Top 30 business, but here, "Zephyr" was the only song that saw any airplay. Certainly the *only* way they could build up a following here was to tour -- and they did tour fairly extensively. I remember calling the radio stations to request that they play Efix, only to be told the stunner "their record label doesn't want us to play them" (eg: has not budgeted enough payola). Gee, what happened to the old- fashioned idea that calling to request a song meant that *I* wanted to hear it, not whether or not the record company wanted to *promote* it???? I'm sure Efix left the States with many more people aware of who they were and familiar with their music, but touring doesn't seem like an effective way to build record releases. Fan bases? sure, but if those fans can't impact the industry through requesting a song on the radio, thus translating into a station reporting to Billboard or whomever that the song had been requested/played a lot, there's no way for the fans to help break a band. So then you're back to touring only to hope to catch the eye of an influential rock journalist or record label exec. That's why I like SXSW, because an unsigned band can get a performance slot. But if the slot is an unpopular one -- because it's too early or too late, or at a more out-of-the-way venue, or on the Thursday and not a Friday or Saturday, or opposite a band that everyone wants to see -- well, they're screwed. At that point the band has to hope that a favourable review is written by someone who manages to attend. Bands often come here several years in a row before managing to really get attention. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 15:35:43 -0500 From: "Amy Rupp" Subject: RE: seven-seas OT Radiohead tour > cool - I really like Steve Malkmus stuff .... > Has anybody heard his new band The Jicks?? do they sound like SM > solo/Pavement...... Wish I were going to hear them instead of Supergrass.... already caught them earlier in the year. Does anyone know anything about Ed Harcourt, the REM opener? The web says he's from Sussex.... There's an interesting review here of Radiohead's _Hail To The Thief_: http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/r/radiohead-hail.shtml Actually there are several reviews of both albums and live shows that are worth reading. I thought the one about The Fall's Chicago date was rather interesting. There are several groups that are often mentioned -- worth checking out. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 16:52:56 -0400 From: Red Subject: RE: seven-seas OT Radiohead tour At 03:35 PM 8/6/03 -0500, you wrote: >Actually there are several reviews of both albums and >live shows that are worth reading. Some music freaks care only for the quality of instrumentation (Rush fans, I'm looking in your direction), but, especially live, nothing compares to someone who knows how to handle a mic. Yup, that's me, music freak :-P Now you'll notice that 'twasn't me who mentioned They-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named ;-) I did think the review of that show was applicable to what I saw and what Will filled me in on -- that the vocals were rather slurred and unclear but that things seemed to get better by the end of the set. Anyway -- a refreshing change from reading reviews where the reviewer doesn't seem to know *anything* about the bands they're writing about (and yeah, I believe this reviewer knows about, well, You-Know-Who ;-) ). ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 15:56:42 -0500 From: "Amy Rupp" Subject: RE: seven-seas White Stripes touring > there is any truth in the rumour that The White Stripes are > going to be > supporting Bowie on the UK leg of his tour ?? They look pretty darned busy, because they already have shows they cancelled to make up, and then the following from the www.whitestripes.com site (BTW, if you mis-type, like I did, you get a chuckle from the fact that you can get shitestripes or shitew(h)ipes ;-) Geez these folks have broken enough bones .... let's see: percussionist slips on ice and breaks wrist; guitarist breaks index finger in car crash. "08/01/03 The white stripes would like to apologize most sincerely to the admirers of the band who have faithfully purchased tickets to see us perform in the midst of this, a most unfortunate accident. A bone in the index finger of my fretting hand was shattered in an automobile accident, making it absolutely impossible to play guitar, especially since I've been instructed by doctor's that there is no way I can move my wrist until it is completely healed. The break did not heal properly, and surgery had to be performed. Three screws were placed in my finger to set the bones and insure complete recovery, three screws that will remain in my hand for life. I have provided a link on the white stripes website www.whitestripes.com to a film of the surgery on my finger for those admirers of the band with tickets to cancelled shows to better understand the complexity of the situation. Our shows from the ninth of july 2003 until the middle of September must all unfortunately be cancelled. This includes the festivals in the British isles, T in the park, witness, reading, and leeds. The real shame is that it is virtually impossible to make it up to those admirers who purchased tickets to those festivals with the sole intention of experiencing the white stripes live performance. We apologize to those people and hope that the other fine performers in the line ups will fulfill a lost space for you. As for the club touring dates we are currently doing our best to reschedule certain venues, but again misfortune prevails and we will simply have no time to make them all up. But we will do our best in the situation that we have been given. So, To those who care, or were wondering, meg and myself sincerely apologize to you and hope to get through this set back with the blessings of God. Jack white III" ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #620 ********************************
