See........I knew that...but that was my point! It's so smug of everyone to think that everything has to revolve around the fucking USA!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe it would've been just as appealing if it hade been set in the London shop rather than some US city. I think that's just stupid, coz I'm guessing it's still the same story line, basically. But that's the way the world works........ Firstly, methinks you are confusing the author with one BRUCE Hornsby, he of The Range and The Way It Is. There is no "s" in author Nick Hornby's name. Secondly, I personally thought that About A Boy made a far better film than High Fidelity, even though Hugh Grant was mis-cast in the lead role. Thirdly, as a Brit, and a fan of Nick Hornby's work, I was VERY disappointed in the film, and the fact that they shifted it over there... Although not a 'blockbuster', I was happy to see "28 Days Later" pull in a decent take in U.S. theaters thus far. Something like $35 million. It'll probably fall into cult status over here, like Chris said, but it's stuck around in theaters much longer than I thought it would. To you or me it would've been, but I guess we have to bow down to Hollywood..... Actually, if you read Nick Hornby's books, there's a neat little crossover piece in his more recent work, How To Be Good. The lead character, a married woman, leaves the marital home and moves into a bedsit. In describing to the reader the occupants of the other flats, she talks of "Dick, a quiet, very nervous guy who works in a local record shop". She describes how she and one of the other occupants spend their time drinking wine and listening to Air, "although Dick is rather snooty about them, in his quiet, nervous way. He says there's much better ambient French pop than this, and he could do us a tape if we wanted." Obviously, this bedsit is in London, not the US. Wonder where they'll set the movie version of How To Be Good..... ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 13:16:59 -0400 From: Red Subject: Re: seven-seas OT: sorta film High Fidelity At 12:26 PM 7/24/03 -0400, you wrote: >It's not everyone to think everything has to revolve around the USA, just a >lot of bigwig film company execs who don't care for artistic merit or >adherence to published work so long as they can top that $100 million >plateau within 2 weeks of release. Again, that's what I was getting at. It's always the almighty dollar that makes the decisions.... but they all seem to think it has to involve the US or they won't GET that almighty dollar! Sorry...just sick of the arrogance that the US puts out.
