However, despite the clear winner, the sheer quality of the cities output over the years meant voters found it hard to pick between the other classic singles. Virgin Radio's Pete & Geoff Breakfast Show looked at the biggest bands from the biggest UK cities in July 2003, and focused on Liverpool for a week. Listeners voted from a list of classic Liverpudlian singles from acts spanning the last forty years. 'Killing Moon', Echo and the Bunnymen's 1984 top ten hit took third place as they enter their 25th year with a UK tour. Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch said, "It is amazing still to be going after 25 years and incredible to think that people are still listening to our songs after all this time." Frankie's disposable but obviously still influential 'Relax' and Elvis Costello's staple of British radio 'Olivers Army' led The Coral's breakthrough single 'Dreaming of You' to complete the top six. 1 THE BEATLES -- Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane 2 THE LA'S -- There She Goes 3 ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN -- The Killing Moon 4 FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD -- Relax 5 ELVIS COSTELLO -- Olivers Army 6 THE CORAL -- Dreaming of You 7 SPACE -- Female of the Species 8 THE LIGHTENING SEEDS -- Life of Riley 9 THE MIGHTY WAH -- Story of the Blues 10 TEARDROP EXPLODES -- Reward 11 OMD -- Enola Gay 12 THE BOO RADLEYS -- Wake Up Boo 13 CAST -- Alright 14 THE ICICLE WORKS -- Love is a Wonderful Colour 15 THE FARM -- Groovy Train Pete Mitchell, who has been close to the music scene on Merseyside across the last 25 years marvelled at the cities output. "Liverpool seems to provide a definitive artist for every era, each time pushing music and the boundaries of pop forward," he said. "Aside from the Beatles, the impact of acts such as The La's, Echo and the Bunnymen and Elvis Costello can clearly be seen in hindsight. This continues today with The Coral bringing a fresh sound to our radio's and new bands such as The Bandits and The Zutons waiting to break. As much as it pains this Mancunian to say it, Liverpool almost has a perfect pop history." ========================================================== The full Manchester music top ten: 1. I still don't get why people adore The Killing Moon over all else Echo has done but it certainly is universal. But I think the "short memory" factor is what's putting The Coral so high on the list. Would you have chosen the same songs by the same groups? I'd've picked "Pure and Simple" instead of "Life of Riley" and "Forever Live and Die" instead of "Enola Gay." Personal opinion, of course. > 1 THE BEATLES -- Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane > 2 THE LA'S -- There She Goes > 3 ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN -- The Killing Moon > 4 FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD -- Relax > 5 ELVIS COSTELLO -- Olivers Army > 6 THE CORAL -- Dreaming of You > 7 SPACE -- Female of the Species > 8 THE LIGHTENING SEEDS -- Life of Riley > 9 THE MIGHTY WAH -- Story of the Blues > 10 TEARDROP EXPLODES -- Reward > 11 OMD -- Enola Gay > 12 THE BOO RADLEYS -- Wake Up Boo > 13 CAST -- Alright > 14 THE ICICLE WORKS -- Love is a Wonderful Colour > 15 THE FARM -- Groovy Train - ------ > 1. Badly Drawn Boy - Silent Sigh > 8. Doves - There Goes the Fear > 9. Happy Mondays - Step On > 10. The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) "Step On" got heavy eMpTV airplay here, but I think "24 Hour Party People" is a better song. I love James' "Laid". Oasis? I'm surprised at this choice given the fact that UK radio listeners heavily preferred "Wonderwall" -- http://www.nme.com/news/104921.htm -- and I think both "Don't Look Back In Anger" and "Champagne Supernova" are better than "Live Forever." Maybe I'm still a bit miffed that "Live Forever" was the original title of "Just A Touch Away" but Oasis released first. Smiths? "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" or "How Soon Is Now" -- the latter is a much-copied classic. I am not a big "Love Will Tear Us Apart" fan but I know many are. I prefer "She's Lost Control" or "Transmission," with the latter probably my favourite. While L'pool has dominated most of the last century, I believe that the 90s were Manchester's decade. They made a big splash in the American press as the Machester scene.... wonder why L'pool hasn't? Perhaps Americans equate L'pool with the Beatles and don't want to update. Would it be possible to do other regional lists? London is obvious, but where's the Midlands list? the East Anglia list? the South West and South East lists? ;-) These would be interesting as well. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2003 11:04:02 -0400 From: Red Subject: Re: OT RE: seven-seas OT: What Are We Doing To Do With Our Lives? Well......then I'd stop complaining to the world then......... coz if you don't want our opinions on this list, which is open to discussion ...about music... then don't bring personal stuff here for us to comment on. I only asked you about the GIG...not your life story. I just gave MY opinion....on what you posted....and the courts would also agree that a 3 yr old shouldn't be up at nearly 1 am.
