I have to admit I just don't hold a very strong opinion about most bands. Last night Will said his three favourite bands were Echo, REM, and The Fall. Mine are Echo, REM, and Rush. Okay, so there's an obvious disconnect between The Fall and Rush, but.... And I haven't hated a band with a passion since the hair/glam bands of the 80s. That was until I saw The Polyphonic Spree. Several of the folks at the Fall last night either live or have lived in Dallas, and they knew what I meant about snotty Dallas people who as fans are as annoying as the band. Maybe I hate 'em so much because it is such a brilliant concept -- when someone described them to me before they came on stage I thought, wow, this could be cool. But for me the music just isn't there. I mean, their recorded stuff must be painful. I think it hits close to home because I grew up Texas Southern Baptist which is a very self-enclosed community; it's church four times a week and other activities and weeks in the summer and basically if you don't fit in you smother. The choir robes and happy-happy and preacher-like lead singer just are too close to a Southern Baptist choir on speed for my comfort. I spent years singing happy-happy stuff that was supposed to make me all peaceful and joyful when in fact I was miserable and I realised my fellow musicians were complete hypocritical cruel people who were just vying for the Miss and Mr Popularity title. I bailed at 16 and became Episcopalian/Anglican and I've never looked back. Until now. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 20:27:34 +0100 From: "Matt H" Subject: Re: seven-seas OT: =?iso-8859-1?B?oFdoYXQ=?= Are We Doing To Do With Our Lives? >That is my biggest pet hate concerning misuse of language. Ooh...don't get me started on misuse of language! One of *my* biggest pet hates (and there are culprits here as well as everywhere else) is the use of "could of" or "would of" instead of "could have" or "would have".... And spot on sir about the Shepherd's Pie!
