The band of singers, to be known as 2003 Voices, will open the Mathew Street Festival next month. Organisers say they were particularly keen to recruit young people to join the massed ranks of vocalists. The hoped-for membership number not only reflects the year, but also marks the date of the city winning the UK's European Capital of Culture bid. The project is being managed by Liverpool vocal teaching agency Sense Of Sound. Today the idea was welcomed by showbusiness personalities. Ian McCulloch, singer with Echo And The Bunnymen, said: "It will be amazing to hear that many singing." Andy McCluskey, former singer with OMD and now in record management, said: "It's guaranteed to be a truly amazing experience." If we didn't have the lows how would we know what high was? We'd all be numb. I was made redundant at my last job as our dept was outsourced by another dept setup in India, all the best to them, the ones I met were a nice bunch and just trying to make a living like the rest of us. I then tried to get work in the US using the H1B visas and didn't get a sniff of work. One day we'll all be able to had in our passports and become citizens of the world and be able to work anywhere but not in my day. I now have a more senior job than I've had before on less than a third of my previous salary (a year and a half ago). The technical world was taking the piss and things had to level out, they've just gone down too far right now and I'm sure they will level out. In the mean time I could start a new business, perhaps something that's in my blood, a chain of record shops (but they'd all have to be on a corner).
