The stench is merciless. I dare ya to stand on the corner and hold a sign that says "Berklee produces graduates who produce the worst shit ever." ;-) What would they do, clobber you over the head with their cello cases? LOL I happen to have driven past Berklee and the people? who were coming and going looked more like they were older versions of the kids on the TV show Fame than future rock-n-rollers, but hey. Yeah, you nailed it, absolutely. That plus future session cats who worship, like, Waddie Wachtel or some similar sh1t. The "I played keys for Stevie Nicks" type. You're right -- I am applying a lot of musical theory and not general *vibe* to the songs, and something has to be a virtual carbon copy for me to cry ripoff! Look and feel isn't protected, remember? :-) True. But hitting the notes...in fact, the idea of "music" in general is certainly not necessarily a priority in rock n' roll, past a point. (At it's best, it's an extremely simple form--and the Bunnymen's tunes are a prime example of that "less is more" and "simple is beautiful" aesthetic.) To be general though -- if "Playgrounds" has a "Bono-rific" close, so does "A Promise" -- repetitive phrases to fade. You'll notice that I am *not* intending to become a music critic / journalist any time soon -- there's too much name dropping and tenuous comparison involved. Having been a music journalist for over a decade, I gotta say, in all fairness, that we're all fulla sh1t. But you knew that. Oh yeah -- whoever the git was that said that Mac didn't use any of his strengths on the album obviously missed the chorus to "Kansas" -- in which Mac's trademark sweet voice is lovely, and the bridge in the same, which is the "mysterious" mucho-reverb Mac voice. Classic song. That, High Wires, and She Sings are prob my faves on Slideling, Gus. - --Chris A. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 14:57:25 -0400 From: Red Subject: Re: seven-seas New Zealand Herald At 12:57 PM 7/10/03 -0500, you wrote: > >Hey, you live near Berklee! I don't exactly think Chris was really talking about that particular school as much as he was saying that the best stuff really comes from bands that just play what they feel, rather than being technically correct...... most of the best bands/artists really have no musical schooling what-so-ever!
