I too love looking into the origins of phrases etc, and indeed the craziness of our language.. I have a few books on the subject somewhere, and once I've found them, I'll mail you off-list with details.. Matt and I also like etymology, and I had to look up the origins of 'local derby' once (when I wasn't working, I could be everyone's personal reference librarian). If we get any more we could have seven-seas-speak ;-) Who else would sort out the various forms of storing Stuff in a house at 2.30/8.30 in the morning!? I swear I'm gonna write a book someday.... there actually aren't that many good Brit<->American English references. The ones that *are* there tend to overfocus on sex -- which is okay for tourists, I suppose ;-) but what if you need to hang up your clothes? - --Amy, who wants to go to the Monster Derby in Derbyshire where several THOUSAND people play footie on an appropriately sized "field"! ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2003 01:20:38 +0100 From: "K.P. Cider is made in the other "big bump" -- East Anglia. :-) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2003 07:37:35 +0400 From: "Peter John Burnand" Subject: Re: seven-seas Glastonbury From: "Barry Whiting" > Did you get to see The Coral, Stu? Bonza. - --- Sadly couldn't get there, Barry, I'm stuck on a little island in the Gulf at the moment, drinking Turkish coffee and fighting-off mad peacocks. Had reports that it was totally boss though. They're doing Paris, Norway and Sweden this week, a mean schedule lately. Their new lp's going to be mega. (By the way, thanks for texting me pre-Mac gig at L'pool.) I'm not even gonna bother asking you to repeat that! None of it makes sense! I've been in English homes where a closet is a closet, and a cupboard is a cupboard...and if there's no closet, they may or may not have a wardrobe, just like here! Did you ever think they might have been 'translating' for you? Part of my information is from literature like CS Lewis' _The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe_, and Harry Potter, because Harry's first bedroom is in the 'cupboard under the stairs.' There are many other references to these terms in BritLit as well. See: http://www.accomodata.co.uk/amlish.htm for a start. Nothing is absolute -- I'm sure there are some Brits who use the terms in the way Americans are used to hearing them. But if I have to use a disclaimer in every statement I make, it's going to make for tough reading. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #513 ********************************
