I too love looking into the origins of phrases etc, and indeed the craziness of our language.. I have a few books on the subject somewhere, and once I've found them, I'll mail you off-list with details.. The scenario you suggest below, once a few key words have been changed ( stage for "bar", and tent for "couch" ) sort of sums up a common Glastonbury Festival for me. Of course, this whole operation is repeated on a daily basis for the 5 days we're there. Cheers Stu Chris Adams wrote: Thanks for the history lesson, Stu. I love that kind of stuff--the genesis of euphemisms/weird expressions: I always thought "blind drunk" referred to blackouts. Where, like, you're at the bar and then suddenly you find yourself, 8 hours later, still in a stupor on your couch, still in your clothes, and you have no idea how how got there. (That 8 hours being the 'blind' part, obviously.) Of course, this is all conjecture on my part. (Heh). - --------------------------------- Want to chat instantly with your online friends? The smell of the cocktail weenies was intoxicating. I finally broke down from hunger, followed my nose, and snuck out some weenies. Now if I could just wrestle the piano away from the completely awful person playing "Imagine"..... good Lord.... But I guess the song is appropriate to the sentiment of this message ;-) - --Amy "and now they're attempting "Pretty Woman" cos someone's pretty loaded! ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:01:02 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: Re: seven-seas Glastonbury - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter John Burnand" > Did you get to see The Coral, Stu? Stu and here I thought you believed texting was the downfall of civilisation ;-) BTW what I could hear over the phone was also good (vocals were clear) and I thought, wow, Mac's high voice is in the best shape I've heard in a long time, and the crowd was rather enthusiastic. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:09:38 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: Re: seven-seas Glastonbury - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stu Bird" > The fact that I saw The Zutons made up for me missing The Coral.. They played an acoustic track on BBC3 during the weekend which was fantastic - they were buzzing about Glastonbury and being there with their mates ie. Zutons, The Basement & The Stands and other assorted members of the, er, 'Scruffle' scene. - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:16:00 +0100 From: "Shaz" Subject: Re: seven-seas More Glasto/t-shirt actually if guys are gonna wear them it should be: 'dip me in chocolate and feed me to the pre-menstrual women' LOL Shaz - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shaz" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2003 10:38 PM Subject: Re: seven-seas More Glasto > the worst one ever was the producer of Later...with JH, > when we were there he said that Jools would be at > > Glass - ton - berry!!!
