Hey all you hosers.... have a happy Canada Day! My boss (well, one of them anyway ;-)) had to rub it in by talking about just getting back from Vancouver and Victoria.... and saying we needed to celebrate Canada Day with high tea at the Queen Victoria Hotel with cream and scones :-P It's our turn on Friday with fireworks and hot dogs :-) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 23:26:15 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Stu=20Bird?= Subject: Re: seven-seas OTOTOT Festie Bashing Reading mails in an ad-hoc manner so apologies etc etc.. You know the score..... I have to defend my beloved Glasto... If the only thing you are interested in is music period, then festivals aren't really for you.. I take it copies of the bootleg won't be needed then ?? I totally understand and respect your opinion, but I think you may not be aware of the true nature of Glasto.. It is different from a lot of the other so-called big-name festivals. At no point last weekend was I not able to get where I wanted to go ( or had to slow my pace down ) due to crowds.. You should see our local shopping complex at sale time.. Now that IS scary !! The Glastonbury Festival Of Performing Arts is as much to do with families, people, ideas, experiences, alternative cultures and lifestyles as it is music. I would still go if all the bands were unsigned, as I can spend nigh on a week in harmony with 100000 people all getting on with each other. That equates to a city the size of Bath, and just shows what can be achieved when like minded people get together. No shock and awe needed..... In July, Bristol will have its annual Bristol Community Festival ( aka Ashton Court Festival ). They have had to start charging ( fiver this year ) in the last couple of years, but until then, it was the biggest free festival in Europe.. A mini-Glasto if you like, with some big bands as well over the years.. This year, the headliners will be Robert Plant, and The Electric Soft Parade ( not sure who's on what day ). From a music perspective, festivals are the perfect way for a band to a) remind people that they are still around, b) get new fans who may not know a band, and c) obtain revenue streams via merchandise on sale for the duration of the event rather than a couple of hours at a gig. Just my 2 p's worth.... P.L.U.R. Carlito, the headline acts for the cancelled Phoenix were transferred to that year's Reading Festival ( one purely for music.. no "nice spirit" there ), so Redaing was a stormer with 2 headliners each night ( Ash/ Page & Plant on Fri, Prodigy/Beastie Boys on Sat, and New Order/Garbage on Sun ).. Vince Power (head of Mean Fiddler) said they were losing a million a year it, shame. If you ever get the chance, do Glasto! Me too!!! I was just kidding, as usual. After a few drinks, I don't mind using a big, stinky box. My brother & I were all set to fly over to get bonkers at, what would have been, the last Phoenix Festival. It was cancelled due to lack of interest or something, and that was probably a good thing, for my brother's and my health.
