Yes, if we cut out *all* "personal" conversation there will be no way to get to know the other list members. Is the purpose of the list merely to disseminate information, or is it to reinforce and grow community as well? We obviously have members with differing opinions on this matter, and what the right balance between "on topic" and "off topic" traffic ought to be -- bearing in mind that there's a huge grey area in between. > Bear in mind that this list is pretty unique in so much that > there is a pretty even split Europe/US ( sorry to others > outside this ), so half of us could sometimes get confused > with stuff due to different language/customs etc. This is also a chance to learn something about how the other half lives, and even if one thinks one knows *everything* there is to know. And there's *always* a chance to learn tolerance. I think people are far too quick to be confrontative. This list is rather like a party. If someone insults another person in front of the rest of the crowd, they ALL get uncomfortable. Same with calling attention to someone's faux pas -- unless it can be done in a very lighthearted way, it's best done in private conversation. If someone came out of the loo trailing toilet paper from the back of their trousers/pants, would you announce that fact to everyone in hearing distance, or would you desperately try to get their attention so you could tell them in private? Behind every computer screen there is a human being with real feelings and wants and needs and trials. One can choose to ignore that fact, but it's far better to try to get to know those people who have *something* in common with you already, than to just use the anonymity electronic communication provides in order to slag them. We used to post a little autobiography when someone new joined, and read their own more substantive one. That would have been an excellent use of this group's web page -- a picture (if one was willing) and then a biography. That way when you read someone's post, you'd have a better idea of where they were coming from, and you might possibly find more in common with someone and decide to get to know each other better. There have been many friendships of varying closeness formed over the years here, and I think most of those involved in one or more would hate to have missed out on that opportunity. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 20:37:29 +0100 From: "Matt H" Subject: Re: seven-seas goodbye. >If someone came out of the loo trailing toilet paper >from the back of their trousers/pants, would you >announce that fact to everyone in hearing distance, >or would you desperately try to get their attention >so you could tell them in private? So I take it you would respond the same way if the person happened to be *you* and you noticed your own predicament? I suppose laughing your ass off might solve the problem.... ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 21:36:51 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: seven-seas The Cavester... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Noose Boy" > Mac has said both good and bad about Cave. He can't even OD." [Turquoise Days, Dr. Adams -- p.130] The Yang ~~~~~~~ Mac picked Cave's "Let Love In" as one of his favourite albums during the Electrafixion-era (circa 1995). Not seen him pick it again, mind. - -- Barry ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 15:46:56 -0500 From: "Amy Rupp" Subject: RE: seven-seas The Cavester... > The Ying > ~~~~~~ > Mac : "Australian, dingo-shagging turd. [Turquoise Days, > Dr. Adams -- > p.130] I have to think that perhaps Mac was picked to be on the Sgt Pepper rework because of his ability to humiliate others in the most side-achingly funny way, and NOT because of his music. Or perhaps both, but if he hadn't been Mac the Mouth I wonder if he would have made the cut. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 21:53:44 +0100 From: "Barry Whiting" Subject: Re: seven-seas The Cavester... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy Rupp" > > The Ying > > ~~~~~~ > > Mac : "Australian, dingo-shagging turd. Actually, the snippet doesn't do the full quote justice.
