I suppose that is the reason I remain firmly rooted in the 19th Century. I don't think it's dull and dreary at all...in fact, I think it's liberating. It removes the artist from the limiting shackles of having to "say" something. It removes art from the realms of the symbolic (specifically words) or the representative (sculpture, painting) and expands it into the potentialities of being a brand-new creation in its own right, being nothing other than what it IS. Which isn't to say that some art isn't about something very specific (I.E. Dylan's "Idiot Wind" being an expression of his anger at the breakup of his marriage) and I'm not trynna say that it shouldn't be that...I'm just saying it doesn't hafta be limited to that. Oh, and Eliot's "The Wasteland" is "ABOUT" something, as well, and it's a great poem...from what I can tell, it's about the stultifying confines and pretence of faux-highbrow 19th century social culture. Speaking of pretence: I think I've gotta stop writing about this now, because I have the sneaking suspicion that I'm coming off like a muthafukkin bastid. - --Chris A. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 10:11:23 -0400 From: "Chris Adams" Subject: Re: seven-seas The Art of Mac aka Mac Art(hur) "K.P. Even if the poet does't "get" it. Which is generally the > case. I think that's a tad harsh Chris. Agreed there is a lot of pretentious shit out there (thank goodness most of it is confined to personal websites and not weighing down the shelves of the local libraries) but I also think there is alot of very thoughful and creative poets producing contemporary material for both children and adults. Agreed, entirely. But my statement "...poetry is just the art of fukkiing around with words..." wasn't intended as a criticism. I think it's a noble pursuit. All I've been trying to say is that it doesn't have to necessarily make a sort of statement...words can be representative, or expressive, or impressionistic, or just simply wordplay...things either work or don't on their own level. - --Chris A. - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
