Ah, the deadly wit of those Brits and their Canadian cousins! I've written volumes of indignance and apology and confusion only to find out that someone was JUST MAKING A JOKE! A member of this list once kindly told me: "We don't use smiley faces." Maybe it's the equivalent of laughing at one's own joke, which would be very bad form indeed? LOL Anyway, when I read something now, I imagine a smiley face on the end and read it both ways.
