I don't hear "content," though certainly reflective, and halfway through the seasons is poignant given that he's probably seen the midpoint of his life. Not as urgent as "Nothing Lasts Forever" but I still hear a man with many missions, not a guy rocking on a porch reminiscing about the good old days. And love? Errrrrrrm. Not going to go there. "Baby Hold On" might be a reassurance to himself.... though it's refreshing as hell that "All My Life (She Sings)" has a female first person. The "she sings" he uses during the chorus are very Leonard Cohen. > "Wonderwall," more obvious references points like latter-day Elvis Costello > and Leonard Cohen are never far from mind. LAURA CASSIDY Agree with Matt.... I can't hear *any* similarity between "Kansas" and "Wonderwall" .... and whoops, isn't it *Ceri* James? unless there's a typo in the liner notes, it ain't Cheri, Laura.... I don't hear any Elvis Costello, either, but haven't listened to much latter-day stuff. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 00:07:28 -0500 (CDT) From: Amy Moseley Rupp Subject: seven-seas "Stake Your Claim" While thinking about this song I was struck with the heretical thought that it could really be a Christian rock song.... there's nothing in it to contradict that, and a lot to support it.... if you exchange the word "tricks" for "miracles" you get an even stronger sense of how it would fit. I don't know if Mac *meant* it that way, but heck, if _The Killing Moon_ was about the Coming of the Messiah.... or Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss.... "Stake Your Claim" is far more straightforward. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #309 ********************************
