Smith" Subject: seven-seas Orange County Register, CA http://www2.ocregister.com/ocrweb/ocr/article.do?id=40388 Quick Hits By BEN WENER Ian McCulloch, "Slideling" (Cooking Vinyl/spinART) - More than a decade since his last solo album - and not long after a trio of decent but overlooked albums by his resurrected mainstay, Echo and the Bunnymen - the Liverpudlian post-punk icon with the romantically brooding voice returns with more overcast jangle, much of which reminds of his influence on today's indie- rock revival. Not that anything here is as sharp or urgent; this is comfy, like Lou Reed without the seediness. A pair of Coldplay-assisted tracks, the springy opener "Love in Veins" and the breezy "She Sings (All My Life)" might have been minor hits back in his prime, and "Baby Hold On" is as lovely a ballad as he's ever penned. These days, that's enough to keep from writing him off. (McCulloch plays Wednesday at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood.)
