I say eagerly anticipated, well it was by me, because let's face it this album is hardly going to trouble the charts too much. Which on the face of it is a shame. The record itself is easily Mac's finest solo album, okay Ocean Rain or Heaven Up Here it ain't but it certainly knocks the patchy Candleland and, how do we put this tactfully, the disappointing Mysterio, into a cocked hat. Despite the absence of guitarist Sergeant and the presence of a couple of new best mates in Chris Martin and Johnny Buckland the album is not too far removed from recent Bunnymen releases, think Flowers to give you an idea of the general sound. You certainly get the feeling that this album is important to McCulloch, the lyrics seem to be the most personal and confessional he has ever written, most notably in Playgrounds and City Parks and current single Sliding. There is an element of vulnerability underneath that notorious bravado after all. Swaggering opener Love In Veins, Kansas, the gritty Baby Hold On and standout track Stake Your Claim can hold their own with anything on the very impressive McCulloch curriculum vitae, which is no mean feat by any stretch of the imagination. That one or two don't quite hit the mark and come across as slightly overblown is a bit of a disappointment, but what else would you expect from someone of McCulloch's character. Don't let that put you off though, there are enough anthems and big choruses throughout to keep everybody happy. Age certainly hasn't blunted the McCulloch powers; the voice is as truly great as ever. If you are a Bunnymen fan this is an essential purchase, if you are a Coldplay fan likewise, it is an opportunity to see how it really should be done. I just hope messrs Martin and Buckland were taking notes when they had the chance, you don't get many opportunities to learn from a master of his craft. With this uplifting and heartfelt album the man in the overcoat and sunglasses makes yet another triumphant return. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 12:20:31 +0000 From: "carlito way" Subject: Re: seven-seas Bunnymen stuff on Ebay ... >But whoever ratted me out didn't >have to do this. NO! Don't mention the Turk! That was cool. It was a little surreal, hearing Mac do the vocal. I always loved that song. It sorta reminded me of the only recorded version of Ian Curtis singing it (that I know of) on "Still". Although, was Mac singing the lyrics right? I guess it doesn't really matter.
