Echo article: Bunnymen/Darko The Insider Apr 29 2003 Liverpool Echo Ian shows the star side of the moon THAT other Macca - Ian McCulloch whose new solo album The Slideling was released yesterday - is not the only one who thinks his band Echo and The Bunnymen were a class act. They are now enjoying even more popularity in the US thanks to the cult film Donnie Darko, directed by 26-year old Bunnymen fan Richard Kelly. The Liverpool band's classic hit Killing Moon is played during the opening credits. Echo And The Bunnymen were always popular with the college circuit in the States but now they are finding a whole new art house audience thanks to the dark movie playing to packed crowds. The surprise news has impressed the Aigburth-based singer-songwriter who has yet to see the film. The movie soundtrack has certainly caught the imagination of the American youth following the success of the TV programme Reborn in the USA featuring 80s Brit acts. Tears For Fears, who also feature in the soundtrack, are reforming on the strength of it. And it's clear why Ian's classic hit was first choice for the film. Donnie Darko, the central character is a troubled teenager who gets caught up in time travel and converses with an imaginary, evil six-foot skeletal rabbit - who tells him to commit violence and that the world has 28 days before it is destroyed. So there's the connection: the rabbit refers to the Bunnymen and the violence in the Killing Moon title. Ian says: "When I sing The Killing Moon I know there isn't a band in the world which has got a song anywhere near that." http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/page.cfm?o bjectid=12902834&method=full&siteid=50061&headline=The%20Insider ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #226 ********************************
