(fwd) NEMO is a semi-scam. They try to do it like CMJ or SXSW but fall short. What they do is charge a non-refundable fee per band [I think it is $35] and then try to book a bunch of bands in the five or six clubs around town during a weekend. Since there are only a few clubs, only so many bands get booked. But, HUNDREDS of bands here in Boston ALONE send in the fee for a hope at playing one of the bigger clubs that they can't get booked into for whatever reason. What often happens is that you are booked at a place you could get booked at any other night, or you aren't booked for the event at all - which happens a lot. No industry people come to it, only local press, who cover it because they think it is a special event, even though it isn't. We tried doing it the first two years and didn't get in despite having records out, with airplay, followings, etc. Then, I went to one of the events and saw that it was pretty lame. Usually it is done in May or June, no Sept. They must not have had their shit together this year. Why the fuck do you think I prefer Englishmen? Every cool guy I've known from here has LEFT. All the good ones are married or gay or both. Even most of the bad ones are, too. (sigh) > What does engineering sound like? Is it anything like production? Somewhat. In my book, engineering is getting all the recording equipment Just So and managing to lay down tracks cleanly or noisily or .... whatever. The technical end of taking a voice or instrument and running it through ambient air and echo chambers and electronica and whatever to the mixing board. Production then is what you DO with all that shit when it hits the board, and deciding what you want recorded in the first place. There's some overlap between the two, obviously. The reason I said what I did is that some of the stuff sounds a little......... cheesy to me. It's like taking a little four-track and laying down some grooves, then handing off the results to the best damn producer/mixer in the world. They'd be starting with a disadvantage to having cleanly recorded multi-multi-tracks. And they wouldn't be able to ask the engineer to tweak this or that. Little four-track means you largely get the engineering of the person who designed the box. > Nah, ya keep typing Christ cos the universe is trynna give you a big hint. > Catch on, girlie! (Hugs, kisses, etc.) I'm not trying to *answer* the question, I'm trying to see whose reality I embrace. I think liking any of the Bunnymen albums more than OR is a bit suspect.... but okay, loads of well-respected people dig HUH, so I am okay with that. But ANY Radiohead album over OR? I do get your point about apples and oranges. Though a Granny Smith apple beats the shit out of any orange any day. And you can't make cider from oranges. (I don't think. God forbid.) - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V2 #188 ********************************
