The bats reminded me of him. 'Principia Martindale' takes place in West Texas and has a bat colony in it. He's great at depicting small town characters and mores, and has an absolutely /wicked/ sense of humor. The last book of his I read (they aren't on audiotape) was 'My Grandfather's Finger'.
