There's less hassle with finding an incompatible electrical outlet, was all I was getting at. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Apr 2003 01:31:19 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas Re: CDWOW > Please read the relevant posts properly ( the actual words..not what you want to read ) before putting words in my mouth.. That has always been the trouble with this list... I admitted that I was "reading behind the lines" (oops! Amy malaprops again -- between the lines) and you're right, that can be a harmful thing to do. > PC building ain't cool.. it's just easier than building a Mac, and that's why there are weekly PC fairs across the UK ( and there are thousands of people at each one in Bristol ( every 14 days ), so that's hardly elitest either ), and virtually no Mac fairs. You yourself suggested that a high end PC can be built for 20% less than an equivalent Mac ( like, who *buys* the OS these days ). So that's the ONLY 2 points of my post cleared up then ( no mention of OS, software, aftersales etc ) The open hardware architecture appeals, but the stability of the Mac hardware and platform and support, which are *only* possible if there *aren't* loads of people rolling their own, has a big advantage as well. Different smokes for different folks. When the PC hardware platform had the advantage of also being able to run Linux, it was a bigger win for me; but now that Mac is UNIX-based, I'm in hog heaven. I'm in a minority, I realise. Macs have long been the platform of choice for graphic design and early MIDI -- and as a result there are a lot of artists who use them. I think this is the driving force behind the "cool people use Macs" argument. As usual, the statement cannot be logically reversed and hold true -- Mac users are not automagically cool -- take me for instance ;-) and Steve Jobs, Apple's guru, who might be cool by some folks' standards but is widely considered a grade-A arsehole by others. FWIW, I have a PC at work, running Windows 2000, and boy do I miss my Mac. I spent loads of time debugging the silly thing and crawling around on the floor dealing with non-standard networking issues. I'm so happy to have a *job* that there's no way I'm making a peep about having my least favourite computer, but it was a powerful reminder of why I *personally* prefer Macs. If I want to Do Everything, then I'll do UNIX. Maybe Raj can give us a scoop on which MPs use which platforms :-P I hope this clarifies things a bit. Nuff peace??
