Please read the relevant posts properly ( the actual words..not what you want to read ) before putting words in my mouth.. That has always been the trouble with this list... PC building ain't cool.. it's just easier than building a Mac, and that's why there are weekly PC fairs across the UK ( and there are thousands of people at each one in Bristol ( every 14 days ), so that's hardly elitest either ), and virtually no Mac fairs. You yourself suggested that a high end PC can be built for 20% less than an equivalent Mac ( like, who *buys* the OS these days ). So that's the ONLY 2 points of my post cleared up then ( no mention of OS, software, aftersales etc ) The original poster said that "Mac users are cool".. Utter shit comment, and I'm so hoping that Osama or Saddam uses/used one, just to show how much of a crass comment that was. Stu Monday is such a shit way to spend 1/7 of your life. Amy Moseley Rupp wrote: Now wait a minute! It's elitist to say that you have to be able to build your own PC in order to be cool (reading behind the lines here). I've built more than I care to mention and it's a royal PITA. It *can* be cheaper, but you have to know what you're doing and buy reliable components -- not necessarily the cheapest ones. And you have to be ready to diagnose and repair said machine when it dies -- plus run a very awful OS (Windows) or do the Linux learning curve. The former is a curse inflicted upon mankind, and the latter is much more "elitist" than the MacOS. Since the newest MacOS is based upon UNIX, there's loads of free software and what you can't find, you can port, if you are technically inclined. I have a dog's bollocks PC with a cinema display (LOL) because when my husband moved out, my lawyer said to buy a replacement for everything he took, and that was one of the things. For a novice user or the power user, the AppleCare protection plan is absolutely essential. I put loads of wear and tear on my iBooks -- the paint is gone from the 'e' key! and if something goes wrong, like the time I left it under a blanket and it overheated, or my kid spilled water into it, or the dog got hold of the AC adapter, I can overnight it to Houston and sometimes have it back *in the next business day* no matter who caused the problem or how much it was to fix. I've had my fill of setting IRQ levels, DMA addresses, daisy-chaining devices, fooling with COM port settings, you name it. The *only* thing I can't do on a Mac is WinMX/Kazaa (and boy is it important right now ;-) ) so my PC is essentially a WinMX/Kazaa server. I don't know how much iBooks are in the UK. Here they can be had for as little as $999 new. You can put together a very low-end PC for about $300, but if you want to approach the functionality of an iBook, it's more like $700. Add in the cost of the Microsoft OS and you're looking at breakeven. I'll have to investigate the costs there just because I'm curious. Maybe I will import some iBooks; they run on batteries except to recharge, and I know there's a multicountry as well as airline seat AC adapter. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Don't forget to purchase your copy of 'Slideling' from a chart return shop I.e. HMV, Virgin, Woolworth's, WH.Smith & Amazon.uk. If you are not sure if your local shop is a chart return just ask them at the counter. Don't just be driven by cheap internet prices..... Cheers cats see you on tour. I was made redundant on xmas day 2001 ( tis true ), and due to the collapse of the telecoms industry, have been forced to work on temporary assignments for under half of the income I've been used to.. And I'm probably lucky.. There's bound to be loads worse off than me. If it's a choice between putting food in the kid's bellies or paying an extra 3 quid for a cd, I know what I'm gonna do. What's the charts anyway????? Haven't listened to those since my younger teenage years ( long time ago kids ). So all you mac users who can obviously afford it, go for it ( massive joke there.. please no shitty e-mails ). Just for the record, I ordered mine in advance direct from cooking vinyl when I renewed my membership.. and paid 9.99 for it.. because the management feel they "will sale sufficient amounts anyway not to offer it via a promotion at a cheaper price". That's what they told me on the phone anyway. I (probably wrongly) assumend that Mac would get more by me ordering thru the label.. Gotta do what you can I guess. It looks like we will be heading to the Pool for the Mac show.. Just gotta barter a cheap hotel room and find the cheapest way to get tix ( don't the postage charges really piss you off.. 4 quid.. Jeez !!).. Stu The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat. Echoing The Bunnymen wrote:Just a little reminder folk.
