Raj, we're twins separated at birth :-) I'm a '67 baby, so our poor mother had to go through hell, but hey ;-) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:14:19 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas Re: CDWOW > Elitest crap.. More like people who can't build their own pc's and have loads of money to spare buy macs.. I'm sure that there are plenty of cool people who use macs, but that is hardly a qualifer... Now wait a minute! It's elitist to say that you have to be able to build your own PC in order to be cool (reading behind the lines here). I've built more than I care to mention and it's a royal PITA. It *can* be cheaper, but you have to know what you're doing and buy reliable components -- not necessarily the cheapest ones. And you have to be ready to diagnose and repair said machine when it dies -- plus run a very awful OS (Windows) or do the Linux learning curve. The former is a curse inflicted upon mankind, and the latter is much more "elitist" than the MacOS. Since the newest MacOS is based upon UNIX, there's loads of free software and what you can't find, you can port, if you are technically inclined. I have a dog's bollocks PC with a cinema display (LOL) because when my husband moved out, my lawyer said to buy a replacement for everything he took, and that was one of the things. For a novice user or the power user, the AppleCare protection plan is absolutely essential. I put loads of wear and tear on my iBooks -- the paint is gone from the 'e' key! and if something goes wrong, like the time I left it under a blanket and it overheated, or my kid spilled water into it, or the dog got hold of the AC adapter, I can overnight it to Houston and sometimes have it back *in the next business day* no matter who caused the problem or how much it was to fix. I've had my fill of setting IRQ levels, DMA addresses, daisy-chaining devices, fooling with COM port settings, you name it. The *only* thing I can't do on a Mac is WinMX/Kazaa (and boy is it important right now ;-) ) so my PC is essentially a WinMX/Kazaa server. I don't know how much iBooks are in the UK. Here they can be had for as little as $999 new. You can put together a very low-end PC for about $300, but if you want to approach the functionality of an iBook, it's more like $700. Add in the cost of the Microsoft OS and you're looking at breakeven. I'll have to investigate the costs there just because I'm curious. Maybe I will import some iBooks; they run on batteries except to recharge, and I know there's a multicountry as well as airline seat AC adapter. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:15:46 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas Re: CDWOW > Indeed that would have been at least a 3 week labour And I'm a July '67 baby at that! :-) Technically possible, which is scary.... google on hypergestation. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 10:20:43 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas OT I got a job! > Rob - Still trying to figure out what he's > going to do when he grows up. We all talk about that, because the high tech industry is notoriously vicious to older workers. 40s, and once you hit 50 -- if you don't look much younger than you are, and you're making too much money, you're outta there. I'd like to become an author and/or editor and/or reference librarian and/or plant hybridiser and/or emerging infectious disease epidemiologist (for starters) ;-) all but author and hybridiser require more formal education, and hybridiser would mean to get the hell out of Texas because the climate is just too vicious. And of course, there's always music.... arranging for orchestra would be a dream; being a recording engineer.... But I digress. Must first do day job and save up if I want to explore other areas. What about you? And how many of you have heard any of the new Mac stuff? I have not as of yet, but I hear it's a pleasant surprise from those who aren't big fans of his solo efforts. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 11:49:39 -0400 From: Rob Maher Subject: Re: seven-seas OT I got a job! Funny, when I was 18 I was convinced I'd be a bass player in a band and wouldn't have to worry about any of this. Oh well. Of course I'd love to be an author some day, but I have to learn how to write first. The more books I read, the more intimidated I get by great authors. Amy, I just read your last email as I was typing this. Hopefully I'm not boring the rest of the list with this. Anyway, as you said, you are in the IT field and you are a Mac person. I am a mac guy, sort of working on the outskirts of the graphic design field(junk mail designer), and still trying to finish my associates degree(I should have listened to my parents and finished college) in Graphic Design, just so I finally have a degree in something. For my own sanity, I need to find some other way to make a living. I have been seriously thinking about getting into an IT career in some capacity, but everywhere I turn, people tell me to get Microsoft Certified in this, or be a Networking Engineer, yadda yadda and I'll be set. I really don't want to immerse myself in the dysfunctional world created by Bill Gates unless I absolutely have to. Amy, I was curious about your education background, and what type of stuff you are doing at your new job if you don't mind me asking. Also, if you had any recommendations for me, a guy who's testing the waters and really can't quit my full time job at this point.
