I'm sure that you're right, but one can also listen to those around them speak, and if THOSE people all have a similar 'accent' then one listens until one finds the closest match. And there's also the reports of others. I've been told many times that I don't sound like I'm from Texas. I definitely have an *American* accent, but it's not very regional.
