Unfortunately, the tape was nicked when we got burgled (not in 'pool, I hasten to add!!). Does anyone have a copy, they could duplicate - I would be eternally grateful - tapes, postage, beer money etc as required Cheers PS Thanks to Shaz for the Lou Reed dates - I've bought the ltd edition of Raven, but haven't had the time to sit down and listen to it yet. March 2003 COOKING VINYL NEWS Welcome to the March Edition of our Monthly Newsletter. Hopefully most of the CV members will now have received your copy of Delicatessen 5 and will be listening to it as we speak. Please note, the Deli 5 CD can only be obtained by becoming a member of the Cooking Vinyl Club and you get it free, so now is a great time to sign up! Last month saw some fantastic new releases from the likes of Richard Thompson, Jackie Leven and The Minus 5, and this month is no exception. March sees the release of the new album by Bob Mould under the new guise of Loudbomb. It is quite a departure from his previous material but nether less proves an essential listen. The end of the month also sees the release of new album 'Fleeting Days' by singer/songwriter Dan Bern, and watch out for the re-released albums by XTC, all at a special budget price no less! We are also very excited to bring you news of upcoming releases by new Cooking Vinyl signings the Wannadies, Lisa Loeb and Twinemen. The Wannadies new album, entitled 'Before and After', is another fine collection of pop perfection. Whilst the name Twinemen might be new to most people, the band features ex-members of nineties band Morphine. The Lisa Loeb album is apparently great, but I haven't heard it yet, so I withhold comment till I do, but my work colleagues wouldn't lie to me, I'm sure. With these three new exciting acts, plus New York's French Kicks just about to release their new album through Cooking Vinyl and the upcoming solo album from Mr. McCulloch himself, I'm sure you'll agree the next few months are looking pretty promising. If it's Dan Bern, he makes 'Fleeting Days' and caroms his scathing free-associative takes on pop, politics, sex and culture to a staggering new level. Over the course of his five official recordings and the many EPs, performance-only specials, and soundtrack contributions the man and his lethal guitar have recorded since 1997, Bern has been finding the big picture in the small - whether plumbing the infinite sadness of being Van Gogh's overlooked son or describing a horrific break up through the gentle light of an Italian holiday. With 'Fleeting Days', Bern processes the monumental, sifting through the rubble of increasingly distant youth and devastating world events, and comes up with gems of insight and emotion. 'Slideling' is Ian's first album without cohort Will Sergeant for more than a decade. As he himself says, "there may be no Will, but there's a lot of willpower." From the upbeat, eternal optimism of the opening 'Love In Veins', through anthemic jangle of 'Seasons', to the dirty strut of 'High Wires', 'Slideling' is the sound of a man who knows his time and place - and it's now, it's here. "I'm much more confident now than I was when I last did any solo stuff," suggests Mac. "It's the first record I've made solo-wise where I'm happy with the reasons why I'm doing it and with the way it's turned out." Visit www.cookingvinyl.com for more on MAC. Jackie Leven Shining Brother Shining Sister Release date: 10 February 2003 Artist: Jackie Leven Title: Shining Brother Shining Sister Format: CD Album Catalogue No: COOKCD250 Release date: 10/02/03 Price: Members: #9.99, Non-Members: #12.49 (See offer of the month) It's hard to think of anyone in culture, popular or otherwise, who is doing more to advocate the sensuous, living power of poetry and its 'practical, pro-active potential in everyday life'. Whilst many of us largely fell away from exposure to poetry shortly after schooldays, Jackie Leven has relentlessly tracked down poetry at its best from all parts of the world. Over ten years of record-making for Cooking Vinyl, Mike Scott, Ron Sexsmith, Martin Okasili, Robert Bly, Eddi Reader, David Thomas and Andy White have all joined Jackie to contribute their spoken word on the new album released last month entitled 'Shining Brother Shining Sister'. Released on 24th February 2003, the album features recurrent participants, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, in collaboration with Wilco. Here is an excerpt from 'Down With Wilco' -First person account abbreviated by Scott McCaughey: "On a stealthy and miserable Mission to London, I smuggled in an analogue hard drive Charlie made sure the mixes were crenulated. By keeping Howlin' Wolf a prisoner in the car, driving by Abbey Road tabernacle every day, and making the birds sing on cue, the whiskey turned to stone so it would be there always, like a Harry Nilsson demo. One year later, you hold the frothy ale in your tankard. Or is that simply a diagram of a cow, with a #30 designating brisket?" After H{sker D{ split up, Mould went solo, started his own record company, released 2 solo albums and formed the band Sugar in 1992 (NME named their debut effort 'the album of the year'). After a couple of albums with Sugar he went solo again to experiment some more. Talking about the new record, Bob Mould has said, "The Loudbomb material is meant to be a soundtrack for most anything, actually. Cooking, cleaning, conversation - any time you need something to fill in the silent moments - that's how this record works best". XTC (comprising the song-writing core duo of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding) signed to Cooking Vinyl in 1997. One of the most admired and fascinating British bands of the last three decades, Partridge's lyrics place him alongside Ray Davies as one of the UK's most imaginative songwriters, whilst their musical style exposes a love of all things English and draws on angular melody, pure pop psychedelia, rural folk and Sixties beat.
