I am not a smoker....I hate cigarettes.... but that doesn't mean I feel a singer should quit just coz of my own personal beliefs! If I don't like an album someone has made, I simply don't play it. But I'm not gonna sit there and wish they would do this or that etc. etc. etc. In fact...I think Mac looks dead cool with a cigarette....as hypocritical as that may sound..... it's part of his personality..... ..... ..... As far as pulling out an old album and CD and Bang, you're back, it comes down to wanting him to pull off older material live as well as he used to. Hey, McCartney still sounds about perfect on he old Beatle songs, and he's 60, at least 15 years older than our beloved Mac. Ultimately, it's his choice of course; he still sounds good in a different way, not any less just different, but, I would imagine live shows generate a reasonable portion on the Bunnymen income, and they may need that money when they decide touring is no longer something they want to do anymore. I don't believe they have a 401k or retirement pension for rock stars. (What can you say about Kurt >Cobain? Don't hold a gun in your hand? Kurt Cobain was a spoiled cry baby who could have gotten help and not been a coward. His wife may have been intolerable but he had a daughter. I do NOT feel sorry for these supposed "icons of the new generation"; if you don't want to be that person anymore, do as Johnny Rotten said when the Sex Pistols ended, and walk away. Period. An artist wouldn't dream of wrecking his/her talent and thus art in order to be *cool*. An artist might do it because s/he is mortal and addicted, but not to be *cool*. ART is what makes an artist cool. A pop/rock star *is* concerned with being cool and they generate a huge amount of their income by making others think they are cool too. They'll do anything to be dead cool, even if it means being dead. Some people manage to pull off both of these acts, especially if they are young. But you can only do it for so long. You can't deny you're ageing no matter how hard you try. We all are. Now, a fan has a right to respect whom they will. I preferred Mac's artist side. There are a zillion "cool" people.... a dime a dozen, hanging out in every club in every land. There are few artists with Mac's talent. He makes the choices; he lives with himself. But I have to say that I'm not nearly so excited about Mac's solo dates because of the decline in his voice. I'm one fan, but there are more. Part of his ability to cover anything well was the pure beauty of his voice, which is GONE. GONE. Hell yeah I haul out the older records. I can barely stand to listen to LIPA which is so beautifully done other than Macca's voice. I would prefer to think it was a two-off? bad couple of nights for his voice, but the Q performance didn't help, either. I'd go to the solo dates out of respect and because some of the stuff is still good -- and to meet list folks. I fully understand the "I-love-Mac-as-an-artiste" argument and you're welcome to it, but I respectfully disagree, and I hope I've done a bit better job explaining why. ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Dec 2002 09:39:24 +0800 From: Bun Ng Subject: Re: seven-seas Choices It's still a free country.
