I haven't perfected this technique yet, so I tend to watch it on my computer, but would like to be able to watch on the television. I would assume that such software would have to have an option to encode in a specific format for those of us with region-specific players. And I don't (yet) know the difference between a DVD and a VCD and whether my current player will play VCDs. Hmmmm.... I can tell I'm going to have to look into PAL-NTSC conversion and a region-independent DVD player. My kids will stare at the telly all day long if allowed but don't like me on the 'puter which is another reason to want it on the television. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 15:37:14 -0600 (CST) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: seven-seas The Last Chapter in the Ketchup Girls saga [OT] This morning one of my daughter's daycare teachers, who is Mexican-American, told me "I heard that song," cos I'd told her about "The Ketchup Song (Asereje)" about three weeks back and it hadn't hit here yet. They are now playing it non-stop here and she loves it! She even looked up the band and found out that their name in Spanish, "Las Hijas de Tomate," was chosen because their father has a band called Tomate (Tomato) (it means The Daughters Of Tomato). Maybe I should pursue a career in What's Big In The UK and will make it here? ;-) Of course, "The Ketchup Song" was dead easy ;-) - --Amy (the lyrics are actually half nonsense in any language!) ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 15:39:30 -0600 (CST) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Moseley Rupp) Subject: seven-seas OT: Chili Peppers on TOTP? I saw them yesterday (TiVo-delayed) and whilst I was happy to see a group of their calibre on TOTP I was a bit disappointed in their performance. Jet-lag? Older age? just seemed a little flat. Did anyone else catch this? I was actually mildly surprised that they are charting as high as they are in the UK, because here they'd rarely crack the top 20. - --Amy ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 17:46:26 -0800 (PST) From: Andrew Ironside Subject: [none] Just checking to see if i'm on this list, also does Julin Cope possess does rehearsal tapes of a Shallow Madness and the Crucial Three? Always wanted to call a pet that name. After listening to Dazzle and Fireworks, I wonder what Ocean rain would sound like with Siouxsie singing? Add a new dimension certainly. Ocean Rain, and a lot of that album and Some of the Banshees work almost sound like classical pieces to me. The arrangements, the strings, so magnificent. I also always thought that I could hear Pulp covering some of the songs on Wire's awesome 154. Especially on I should have known better. Sure you have the Jam and the Kinks, but in my opinion Brit pop started there. A.I. From my own experience I can assure you that: Region-free players are usually found among the cheapest brands. In the US look for instance at Apex, or Sampo. I have a European version of the Apex 660 (around $ 150,-) which plays whatever I throw at it. Sometimes a little tweaking of the firmware is required but that is easy, and not a big risk considering the low price of the players. Your home-brewed DVD will not contain a region code unless you add one, so it will play on all players. Most DVD player do PAL - NTSC conversion or vice versa on the fly. Again, look at the cheapo's. All DVD players play VCD and most play SVCD. Again, the best chance is to be had with the made-in-China players. If converted (or "ripped") to VCD, which is MPEG1, Live in Liverpool would fit on a CDR (around 700 MB) If converted to SVCD, which is MPEG 2 at a higher resolution, Live in Liverpool would need 2 or 3 CDR. VCD quality equals a slightly worn VHS tape. SVCD is between VHS and DVD. The sound quality of both VCD and SVCD is the same, and incomparably better than VHS. Software to "rip" DVD's to VCD or SVCD can be found readily on the Web. Another option would be to convert the DVD to DivX, which, using the same space/compression factor as for VCD, would give you even better results. Divx, however, can only be played on a computer.
