People wonder what a young thing like me is doing with an old person's hobby -- well, the stories you hear are real life and all over the map -- or the heavens, as you will see. I thought the more dry-wit lot of you might appreciate this, and good Lord if you could actually solve this riddle I am sure you'd be lionized ;-) poor sod even had a cardinal direction for a surname..... WEST Hi, I am trying to trace a merchant mariner who does not want to be found - but believe he was ashore in Leicestershire, Russel Square NQ?/WQ? and South Hampstead in 1901/1902. The information I have on him is Edward Woodcote Taylor West last known ship was the BISN ship "Nuddea" which he left on the 31st April, 1901. I have the following addresses for him - can someone please look in directories or whatever is available or give me a hint on how I might find him - he has disappeared into thin air - hopefully not never to be found again. [ Pun -- she wants to find him. ] The following information comes from his merchant seamen records obtained from the NMM London. On the 6th September 1901he signed some papers and the last date 'on a ship' was the 31st April, 1901 On "Application to be Examined" dated 9th December 1901 he gives as the name of person he is residing with at address as ***Lesgathorpe/Osgathorpe, Loughborough, Leicestershire**** 13th December - he signed a document giving his address as 84 Guildford Street, Russel Square, NQ?/WQ? 16th December 1901- another "Application to be Examined" - back to Lesgathorpe 27th December - back to Russel Square 6th January 1902 Another "Application to be Examined" - back to Lesgathorpe 4th April 1902 - now at 39 Alexandra Road, South Hampstead 7th April 1902 - another "Application to be Examined" - back to Lesgathorpe 11th April 1902 - still at South Hampstead 23rd April 1902 - another "Application to be Examined" - back to Lesgathorpe - HE PASSED - FINALLY This is where his records end. The NMM has no more on him, and Lloyds have no records of him either. Were Russel Square and South Hampstead Seamen's Homes, as his family lived in Hampshire, where he was born? Any idea what the address at Leicestershire would have been? For those that I have intrigued with another "Application to be Examined". He kept failing his Navigation - every time. Previously he had failed Seamanship twice and colour test once on his 'way through the ranks'. Did they take pity on him and give him his certificate? Could he get a job if he couldn't navigate? Barring two stints on ships of about two years from before 1881 the best he could do was a few months at a time - did he kept getting kicked off for being a rotten sailor? I might add that he went through the training ship "Conway" for two years - his instructors must be rolling in their graves. Just to add a little more confusion to the tale - family 'history' states that he went down on some ship, some time, some place, some where, some country, maybe somewhere around Australia - he had family in New Zealand, and family (and money?) in England. My personal opinion is that he crashed his ship somewhere because he couldn't read either the charts or the stars. Many people have checked many records for me, including the GRO Naval/shipping death index, and the Lloyds Captains Registers and shipping records, and he is not there, or anywhere, so I am trying this new line of investigation. As nothing was heard about him from April 1902 and he was born in 1861, I still have, I would guess about 20 years in which he could crash that ship. The next steps are very tedious, to go the the GRO records from 1902 on, and also the National Probate and Wills Index. However, this also involves much travelling to access them. Hopefully, someone can help. Any help or advice, will be gratefully accepted. And, if there are any relatives out there, I would love to hear from you too.
