There's a core of songs (see Ivan's post) that the Bunnymen are expected them to play. I'd be the first to gripe if I left a gig without a rendition of NLF, Killing Moon, Ocean Rain etc etc. Personally, I don't think (e.g.) Bedbugs falls into that group of songs but if that's the case, fair enough, crank it out (...and I appreciate there is a U.S./U.K. perspective to all this). But I do think they could mix it up a little. Not wholesale changes but maybe 3 or 4 songs not in the usual diet. Not obscure B-sides (half the venue disappears to the bar) and I'm not too bothered about HUH/Porcupine tracks, either, because I don't believe they would fit..... ....but why not include a choice moment or two off the well-received "Evergreen" ("Just A Touch Away", "I'll Fly Tonight" for example)...the lead track from "Flowers" (only lasted one tour, IIRC)..."The Game" (one of their best selling singles)..."The Fish Hook Girl" (Ok, it's a B-side but it was always popular live)...etc You know, just something to catch you a little unawares. Anyway, all this is really nit-picking as it's still The Bunnymen live - a great night guaranteed. - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 12:50:16 -0000 From: "Noose Boy" Subject: seven-seas-moderated RE: seven-seas Re:"play it safe" setlist I don't think any act would lose out by taking a leaf out of Mr McNabb's book, who does very long sets, always great songs and these days I'd be surprised if one show was anything like the next. If the songs are good and done well then the audience, be it hardcore fans or first timers, would appreciate the stuff, n'est pas? For me the Bunnymen could be accused, at times, of just going through the motions. This is meant to be a celebration of 25 years in the business, I hope they don't let us down and I'm sure they won't. Certainly the last time I saw them, at Glasto, they were top. Anyone organising a meet for the London show? (O'Neals?) Pub on the corner or if you want a bite to eat before, the Vesbar just across the road? I have tried to convince these people that it's still worth the price of admission, but they want a different type of set at this point and I can't say that I blame them. I'll keep going to the shows, but I hope they give it some thought, because they are losing a few of the original hardcore devotees by staying so devoted to the poppier stuff. I'm happy to hear that they have had a good strong draw on this tour though...I just want to see them keep that core coming back.
