I wasn't calling Mick Houghton 'classic'. I was referring to him as the publicist during the 'classic' bunnymen era. I agree with you on the bit about extra tracks. However, as labels sometimes do, Warners said there *had* to be extra tracks, in order to widen the appeal, and perhaps encourage fence-sitters such as yourself to shake the quarters outta their piggy banks to purchase the remasters (though I'm fairly certain every member of this list will have the extra tracks in their file libraries within 24 hours of release, whether or not they choose to purchase the albums). At that point, the band & mgt took a look at what was on the archived tape reels. As Warner are still talking about a release of the Sweden gig, none of those tracks (many which were remastered for the boxset) were included. They sorted through what was left - looked at what hasn't been remastered for CD yet, and chose from there. Like Mac & Will have said in the press - The Bunnymen weren't the type of band that recorded 12 extra tracks per recording session. We've all heard pretty much what's out there. What that leaves us with is a collection of alternate takes, early versions and live tracks - perhaps some of us have heard some of them... But on all the seventeenth-generation cassettes I have of all this material, I've never seen the Grey Album-era studio track I'd mentioned on the previous e-mail. Dunno who found it, or where... but THAT's the one that I'm really excited to hear. No word on release date - though my money's on October, and no word on Les' involvement, though I will say that I haven't heard of Les having had any communication with Bunnycamp - Will included - since the Q Awards. - -I - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Red" To: Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 6:27 AM Subject: Re: seven-seas remasters... > At 09:35 PM 8/16/03 -0700, you wrote: > > >good news - Mick Houghton, 'Classic' Bunnymen Publicist, is back on > >board for > >the project. > > > >according to Will, a lot of great photos, etc.. have been dug out. > > Just curious..........since 'classic' Mick Houghton is back on > board.... what about the other 'classic' man??? ;-) Has Les had any > kind of involvement in picking these extra tracks and stuff, he may > not be in the band these days, but he still wrote and performed them > etc, and those are his albums too!! > > I thought they weren't gonna add all those xtra tracks?????? We got stuck in traffic and missed them in the signing tent :-(. We were still on the A12 at 1.12pm and I thought we were gonna miss all of the Bunnymen. We actually got parked up at 1.15pm which was a miracle!! I got out the car to hear the Bunnymen playing the 1st song - Lips Like Sugar, we then had to walk a long way to the entrance (listened to Bring On Dancing Horses and Seven-Seas on the way to front of stage). Got to front (knackered) to see the rest of the set - Nothing Lasts Forever, Killing Moon, The Cutter, Back of Love. They were on for half an hour. Mac's voice was absolutely brilliant (as it was when I saw him at Summer Sundae festival in Leicester last Sunday). Don't know what he's been doing/taking or whatever but his voice was exceptionally good last Sunday and yesterday!! Seemed to go down well with the crowd but there was a distinct lack of Bunnyhopping/jumping about.... We then legged it to see The Rainband on another stage just to hear them say "Thanks, you've been great, goodbye" grrrrrrrr :-(. What I've heard of them I like a lot, I think they are a bit like Interpol in as much as they are derivative of good 80's bands although I haven't heard enough of them to know that for sure....so don't quote me! Went to see I Am Kloot (the more mature slightly grey haired Liam Gallagher). Fantastic singer/songwriter from Manchester went down REALLY well with crowd and was up for a bit of Manc banter....Mis-teeq were due on next and a few boys kept shouting for Mis-teeq to wind the I Am Kloot singer up. They wanted girls and to everyone's surprise I Am Kloot's next song involved dancing girls dressed in 1920's dresses so that shut the hecklers up!! Foo Fighters were superb and had the crowd eating out of their hands.... Coldplay were alright (bit boring here and there). Chris Martin doing his impression of Bono by wandering about all over the side of the stage etc.....Mac never joined them at the end which is good coz it would've been a bit predictable.... I guess I am in between everyone. The point of buying remastered CDs is to hear things you didn't hear on the original mixes of the CDs [or albums, if you haven't upgraded when the CDs were first released]. For the classic audiophile or fan, some albums are worth having a remastered copy of. For other stuff, forget it. Obviously, most people signed up to a band's e-list will probably want the remastered stuff, with or without the extra tracks. I bought some of the Rolling Stones remasters - none of which had extra tracks [Mick is such a cheap bahstahd]. But, I never bought any of the Stones stuff on CD, I just used the tapes and albums. Admittedly, in recent years, I didn't listen to the Stones much. But, replacing a lot of my back catalog with remastered stuff - especially a lot of the stuff from "Black & Blue" on - reminded me why I love the stuff in the first place! And since so much of the music industry sucks right now, it was great to hear some of this old stuff. I also recently bought the first three Psychedelic Furs albums remastered ["Talk, Talk, Talk" and "Forever Now" were worth it; the debut is not]. Again, most people are not going to buy this stuff but the difference in sound is really amazing and well worth the $11 I paid for each CD.
