"But if we didn't get it, it wouldn't have mattered that much as = to my mind we've been the capital of culture for a hundred years anyway! "It's a shame about Birmingham, but it wasn't about the campaign = it was about the city. I've always liked the people of Birmingham, but = the city's not the prettiest, while Liverpool is a beautiful city. "Liverpool has transformed itself over the last five years. It has = been regenerated. It's so different to how it used to be 15 years ago." As the front man of Echo & the Bunnymen, who celebrate their 25th = birthday this year with the remastering of their early back catalogue = and a spate of appearances including V2003, McCulloch has never been one = to mix his words. "We'll be playing back-to-back classics," he says swiftly of his V = Festival appearance, but he's torn what to do after the band's set. "I = might leg it back for the match - Liverpool verses Chelsea - but = hopefully there'll be a telly on site so I can hang around for = Coldplay." Chris Martin has long voiced his approval of The Bunnymen (as have = The Coral, Interpol, Oasis, Moby & Flaming Lips) - Gwyneth Paltrow's = Brit' squeeze even cropped up on "Mac's" recent solo album, Slideling, = and invited the Scouser up on stage during Coldplay's set at Glasgow's T = In The Park festival. "We did Lips Like Sugar," he says casually, referring to the = Bunnymen's 1987 single, "and I stole the show. "Chris introduced me as the second best singer in the world and a = song by the best band in the world. He used to introduce me as the best = singer in the world, so he must be feeling a bit more confident = nowadays..." The remastering of the first five Bunnymen albums - Crocodiles, = Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain and Echo & The Bunnymen - has = meant that McCulloch's relaunched solo career will have to be put on = hold for a while. "It wasn't meant to be a side project. I just had these songs that = I wanted to put out as ME although I'd like to do more next year solo. = But as this year is the Bunnymen's 25th anniversary, you can't shift = that date." The forthcoming batch of CDs, naturally, features plenty of extras = to keep fans happy including lyrics, photographs and extra tracks. "I'm not one to reminisce, but it did bring a lot back," says the = singer of the process of compiling the new editions. "We were head and = shoulders above everyone else. We were the best band on the planet!" And while it hasn't been 100% confirmed just yet, The Cure are very likely playing a show on Sept. 20th just outside of Los Angeles. Here's the info so far: KROQ presents The Cure The Psychedelic Furs Violent Femmes Berlin Also rumored to be on the bill - Echo & the Bunnymen and Siouxsie & the Banshees (at this time, I can not confirm either of them) Sept. 20th, 2003 at the Hyundi Pavillion in Glen Helen, Ca.. Just to reiterate, The Cure are not 100% confirmed just yet, but they are very close. Also, there is no truth to the rumor that this will be called the "Roger O'Donnell, This Is Your Life" festival. : ) ================= this taken from Burned Down Days, The Psych Furs' unofficial Official news source: Okay, I can't hold back any longer. I've been keeping this a secret for too long now, and it's time to 'fess up. *deep breath* The Cure will PROBABLY be headlining the September 20th show in Los Angeles. Final confirmation is still pending, but it is most likely going to happen. I'm really, really sorry that I had to act like the rumor that was posted was false, and I'm also really sorry that I wasn't able to post this news earlier. Please understand that the ONLY reason I knew this was because of a connection between myself and the Cure, NOT because of anything I heard from the Furs or their management. For that reason, it would not have been appropriate for me to have given the news here. The only reason I'm posting this now is because it's getting closer and closer to September, and I know some of you are going to want to start making the neccessary plans to head out there for the show. Tickets haven't gone on sale yet (I don't know when they will), but expect them to sell VERY QUICKLY when they do. In my experience, these one-off Cure shows tend to attract a lot of people from far away. Having the Furs on the same bill will only increase the demand. Please keep in mind that this information has NOT been publicly announced, and is still considered TENTATIVE until further notice. I will let you all know the minute I know for sure. Obviously this is a public forum and my posting this is going to lead to immediate gossip-spreading, but I'm not all that concerned since CoF gave enough of a teaser already yesterday. ================= ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-moderated-digest V2 #236 ******************************************
