But hitting the notes...in fact, the idea of >"music" in general is certainly not necessarily a >priority in rock n' roll, past a point. I heard Alice Cooper interviewed on the radio the other day, and he was saying that, having seen McCartney live, he's decided to follow his lead and start doing shows in which he does stuff to sound exactly like the records instead of all the fancy shit like extra guitar or drum solos etc that he'd always done before. Fuck that. I don't wanna go to a gig where the band sound as though they're miming to a CD. I can save my money, stay at home, and stick the album on if I wanna hear that. I wanna hear all the bum notes, the extra bits, Walk On The Wild Side, Sex Machine etc. Sure I wouldn't get the same atmosphere sat at home listening to a CD, but technically perfect musicianship does not equal atmosphere in my book. It was said that he was in the sirius studios for a session at some point while on tour, but somehow I managed to miss it. I have yet to hear either of the singles on there, they must've chosen 'high wires' as the track they wanted to play. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 15:41:05 -0400 From: "Chris Adams" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas New Zealand Herald multipart/alternative Sender: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Reply-To: seven-seas@smoe.org Amy Moseley Rupp Sent by: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org 10-Jul-2003 03:32 PM Please respond to seven-seas To: seven-seas@smoe.org cc: Subject: Re: seven-seas New Zealand Herald > >the best stuff really comes from bands that just > >play what they feel, rather than being technically correct...... > > damn right. The *best stuff* can come from anyone, whether or not they are technically correct. If good music can be produced by anyone who puts their heart into it, then I could take any broken down boozer and put him into a recording studio and walk away with a hit record. Or a Grammy. Or both. That would be Mr. Tom Waits. You also have to know how to write a good song and how to play or sing. Cohen/Reed/Dylan: None can sing. But they're easily 3 of the most distinct vocalists of the past fifty years. Steve Perry from Journey can sing. And he's sh1t. Sex Pistols couldn't play. Dylan, when he started, could barely play. Subway sect couldn't play. Buns couldn't play much. And they were all great. Nick Cave couldn't sing or play. I think the argument doesn't hold much water. - -CA ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 15:54:11 -0400 From: "Chris Adams" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas New Zealand Herald multipart/alternative Sender: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Reply-To: seven-seas@smoe.org "Sing" as in "hit the pre-prescribed notes." Perry, risible as he is, can do this. Cohen, although a genius, probably hasn't nailed a note since '79's Recent Songs. But his warmed-over death rattle makes him all the more charming. - -CA Red Sent by: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org 10-Jul-2003 03:57 PM Please respond to seven-seas To: seven-seas@smoe.org cc: Subject: Re: seven-seas New Zealand Herald At 03:41 PM 7/10/03 -0400, you wrote: >Cohen/Reed/Dylan: None can sing. It's the 2nd best New Order record. Well I caught McCartney knock a couple of tunes out over the Mersey last month, and I suggest Mr. Cooper syringes his ears. Exactly like the records ? Not particularly. A guilty pleasure ? Definitely. - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-moderated-digest V2 #220 ******************************************
