There are resounding, er, echoes of his late great 80s Britrock outfit briefly reunited a few years back. That's clearest on the opening track Love In Veins with its vibrant guitars and big string sweep, while the closing Stake Your Claim also manages to come on a little New Order-ish, and he lifts a bit of Walk on the Wild Side for Baby Hold On. But mostly this is McCulloch in fine voice and heavy-heart, at his rueful best on ballads like Playgrounds and City Parks and the Martin/Buckland-assisted Sliding and Arthur. Old Bunny fans are directed this way, so too are curious Coldplay followers. I dare ya to stand on the corner and hold a sign that says "Berklee produces graduates who produce the worst shit ever." ;-) What would they do, clobber you over the head with their cello cases? LOL I happen to have driven past Berklee and the people? who were coming and going looked more like they were older versions of the kids on the TV show Fame than future rock-n-rollers, but hey. You're right -- I am applying a lot of musical theory and not general *vibe* to the songs, and something has to be a virtual carbon copy for me to cry ripoff! Look and feel isn't protected, remember? :-) To be general though -- if "Playgrounds" has a "Bono-rific" close, so does "A Promise" -- repetitive phrases to fade. You'll notice that I am *not* intending to become a music critic / journalist any time soon -- there's too much name dropping and tenuous comparison involved. Oh yeah -- whoever the git was that said that Mac didn't use any of his strengths on the album obviously missed the chorus to "Kansas" -- in which Mac's trademark sweet voice is lovely, and the bridge in the same, which is the "mysterious" mucho-reverb Mac voice. - --Amy ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 13:29:36 -0500 From: "Ted Turner" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas(Brotherhood): New Zealand Make out "a lot like some of the guitar driven New Order stuff...think Ceremony or any number of tracks on Low-Life or Brotherhood or Power Corruption and Lies."
