I saw The Smiths on their first tour, at the Beacon Theatre in NYC and they were so friggin' awesome. It could have been the freshness; the fact that they played in a small place, I don't know. But they were really good. Two years later, I saw them at Great Woods, this big stadium in the Boston area, and they were disappointing, mostly because they played SO many slow songs and the night seemed to drag on and on. I recall that the "The queen is dead" was absolutely brilliant that night and they did have a second guitarist who really filled out the sound. But the vibe was very depressing. However, when we saw Morrissey on his last tour a couple of years ago, I was really surprised. We saw him in this 1200 person club called Avalon and he and the band were really pretty good. They kept the show moving, mixing up all his solo stuff and a couple of Smiths song, like "Half a person." - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Henry Biedenkapp" To: Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2003 9:40 AM Subject: seven-seas The Smiths Again > >From: "Matt H" > >It's getting worse, too! Blimey, Henry, that was quite some rant! And very eloquently put, may I say! One of the live recordings I have is one the BBC made. Dunno where or when the gig was, but it was a released as a bootleg called "A Kind Of Loving", and the sound quality is excellent, as is the band's musicianship. Morrsissey's vocals are, well, Morrissey's vocals.....
