Is that still the case with Freeview? I know it was with On/ITV Digital, but apparently (so their tech guys said) it was because they transmitted in three different frequency bands, and most people could only pick up one or two with their existing aerial, not all three. I would've thought that that isn't a problem with Freeview (mine works through my old aerial instead of the fucking monstrosity I had to have put up by OnDigital). ====================================== http://www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 09:34:40 +0100 From: matt.harkness@bt.com Subject: seven-seas-moderated RE: seven-seas freeview - ''If you don't fancy getting a dish a tt ached to your house...'' >did anyone tape the show with mac (& me ;-) ) in it then .. i think it >might possibly be repeated on F$%^&*(*^%$%$ bb3 on wed 30th It's already been repeated on BBC3. This was a post lifted off the Aztec Camera list - ------------------------------------------------- If you are around Manchester this might be of interest to some on list (see below). All the talks are sold out now but Bill will be in the gallery most days from 11am if you fancy a chat. Don't go tuesday 29th as this his Birthday. Bill Drummond Thursday, April 24, 2003 - Sunday, May 04, 2003 In 1995, Bill Drummond bought a work by his favourite contemporary artist, Richard Long, for $20,000. It was a photograph and text work called A Smell Of Sulphur In The Wind. He hung it on his bedroom wall and was very pleased. In 2000 he realised he no longer had any sort of relationship with the work, so decided to do something about it. So far, this doing something about it has evolved into a journey, a book, an exhibition and a performance, all sharing the same title How To Be An Artist. Between April 2003 and July 2006 Bill Drummond will be visiting residential care homes, prisons, schools, art spaces, front rooms, drop-in centres, cafes and other places with his performance and accompanying exhibition How To Be An Artist. The intriguing presentation lasts two and a half hours and offers everyone present the chance to own 1/20,000 of A Smell Of Sulphur In The Wind. Performance times and dates; 7pm - 24, 25 & 26 April - Gallery 1 7pm - 1, 2 & 3 May - Gallery 1 Exhibition times and dates; The exhibition is open to the public during normal gallery open hours; A further opportunity to purchase your own 1/20,000 of A Smell of Sulphur In The Wind Tue - Sat: 11.00am - 6pm Sun: 2.00 - 6.00pm Mon: Closed In the past Bill Drummond has used various means to interrogate and explore the cultural landscape, including pop music (The KLF), writing (The Manual, Bad Wisdom and 45) and actions (The K Foundation Award and the burning of a considerable amount of money). Tickets from Box Office #5/ #4 conc. Places are limited so please book early. Warning: There is nothing in this exhibition or performance that can be construed as a step-by-step guide to being an artist of any kind. - - _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. A mere 25 years into their career, and although only Will Sergeant and main man Ian McCulloch remain from the original foursome, their position in music - along with their music itself - is as relevant today as it ever has been. Whilst the next Bunnymen album won't be out till next year, this is a splendid solo project from McCulloch in the interim. Whilst gloom and doom might have been apparent on some Bunnymen albums past, 'Slideling' is as pop an album as McCulloch has ever made, but proves yet again that pop needn't just be about banal lyrics and pretty appearance before lyrical substance. The tracks are immediate but long lasting. "Love In Veins" is bright and uplifting. Great start. "Playgrounds And City Parks" like "Rust" from '99. Moodier maybe, but strong pictures and a style of imagery that can only be Mac. "Sliding" (the single with only one 'l') is a perfect representation of the whole album, and if you ever wondered who this man respects in musical history, then check out "Baby Hold On" - the sound of a Scouser Lou Reed. He has such an individual style that is immediately recognisable too. Lines that tell of "stars of wonder", pleading to "let it out to let it show" or the time being "half past yours and mine" show a magical simplicity that never falls into clichi mode. "Baby's On Another Train" might start off subdued, but it soon kicks in with the most catchy of hooks. "Some Kinda Love" is more akin to the Bunnymen's last 'Flowers' album, but is sharply intelligent pop. Although "Kansas" is more atmospheric and naggingly moody, it just adds contrast without dragging the other tracks down. "Stake Your Claim" brings up the rear with a fleetingly magical bassline and splendid chugging melody. It is all really great stuff. If you have any doubts that his inspiration may have seized up after a quarter of a century, then just listen to this album. It is the sound of a natural musician, newly invigorated, still with a lot to say. And after talking with Ian himself about this CD, here are some extra snippets. Why are there only 11 tracks? Football crazy Mac wanted a strong attacking team, not one full of substitutes. Fair enough. Succinct it is. Also the name of the album originates from when his manager wrote down the track "Sliding", but wrongly with an extra 'l'. It stuck. Mac is not just glowing with a personal resurgence, but is also chummy with Coldplay - which has helped spread the Bunny-word wider. Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland play on two tracks here ("Sliding" and "Arthur") and Mac will be supporting them on live dates in 2003. A pretty cool association that came about through mutual admiration, and Chris Martin being given a box set of Bunnymen albums one Christmas. If the association with Coldplay has meant that more people are becoming more acquainted with Ian McCulloch or the Bunnymen, then how right that music comes full circle. 25 years is a long time to wait for justified or popular recognition, but better late than never.
