Hi, all. I'm back from another quick one over the pond to see the beau - long distance love SUCKS. Can't wait to get over there full time. Great weather this time around though! Anyhow, I spent last night digging through nearly 200 posts - on the moderated list no less - and am so very happy to see that there's life still left in the list. The show is Changing Rooms. I have to admit that I get sucked into those stupid shows really easily - I especially love it when the neighbo(u)rs ruin the room and the people say they're going to spend the night re-painting or something! :) I used to get BBC America in SF but now that I'm temporarily out in the sticks it's not part of the cable package. Which is horrible since I only got about 3/4 of the way through the first series of the Office on vid. while I was over there and am dying to see the rest. Quality stuff. Coupling can be pretty funny too - they were showing that a lot on BBCA. And to bring this all back to the Bunnymen - I picked up my tix to see Mac in SF May 27. Coldplay the next night - is Chris Coldplay going to be sick of his guest appearances by then or no? I'm not afraid to admit (even to this crowd) that I'm still into Coldplay. Leaps and bounds better than any of the other available crap out there. Supposedly we'll have a new Elbow album soonish though - they were in the studio in January. And, finally, anyone have an opinion on the new issue of the NME with the article about Madchester? That was one of my favorite "movements" of all time but is the article as dull as the Q one about Brit Pop? So many questions. I'll shut up now. Not sure if it's the same thing, Anne, but there's an NME mag out on the Madchester scene (I think it's part of the 'Originals' series or whatever it's called) which is basically a cobbling together of all their articles from that time into one publication. Paint-splattered Roses (what else ?) on the cover. It's alright. Certainly a dead easy way for the NME to make some extra dosh. - -- Barry - -- Barry Whiting barry@urquell.freeserve.co.uk ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 11:51:26 -0700 From: Charles Pham Subject: seven-seas-moderated OT: Martin Gore For LA fans, Martin Gore is doing a solo show at the Mayan Theatre, May 6th. Dan Bern Fleeting Days Release date: 31 March 2003 Artist: Dan Bern Title: Fleeting Days Format: CD album Catalogue No.: COOKCD255 Release date: 31/03/03 Price: Members: #9.99 / Non-members #12.49 Just before we get into April, March leaves us with Fleeting Days by the most tender-hearted folk-rocker on the music scene. With his sixth album, Dan Bern processes the monumental sifting through the rubble of increasingly distant youth, the devastating world events, and comes up with gems of insight and emotion. In his songs, he tries to define the relationship between love and music, he searches for heroes and rejects Einstein's theory of relativity for the simple pleasures of thinking about a girl. Fleeting Days comes after the scathing The Swastika EP and sport-song cycle/book World Cup. Dan Bern continues to bring the funny, but this time he's smuggling it within 13 musically eclectic songs, a wider worldview, and his most sophisticated recording to date. Slideling is Ian's first album without cohort Will Sergeant for more than a decade. As he himself says, there may be no Will, but there's a lot of willpower. From the upbeat, eternal optimism of the opening 'Love In Veins', through anthemic jangle of 'Seasons', to the dirty strut of 'High Wires', 'Slideling' is the sound of a man who knows his time and place - and it's now, it's here. I'm much more confident now than I was when I last did any solo stuff, suggests Mac. It's the first record I've made solo-wise where I'm happy with the reasons why I'm doing it and with the way it's turned out. Although they have elements of snarly garage rock, slick new wave and giddy classic mod-pop, they remain completely unique. The band - now a quintet, newly bolstered by the arrival of drummer Hugh McIntosh - work together like draughtsman creating musical architecture; a note is never wasted, a drop is never spilled. Their songs always seem to be on an angle, hovering just at breaking point. They cut to the quick with lurching riffs and palpitating percussion but they are also cute and coltish and undeniably catchy. At heart, this is simple pop music, with hooks hookier than velcro and disarmingly pretty three-part harmonies.
