Here it's not the music press who really have any influence -- hell there *isn't* much good music press (ChrisA please jump on amazing soapbox here). _Rolling Stone_ has become a scene magazine -- what's already big and not what's going to be. I got an issue of CMJ (College Music Journal) at SXSW and almost wept with relief for there were the bands I've been discovering on my own. College radio has its own problems, but they have just about absolute freedom with playlists provided you can convince a twentysomething that a band is *cool* enough to play. Here the record labels rule and it's actors and actresses a la C(h)ristina Aguilera that make the scene. Many many people listen to the radio or play it for customers during their work day so a lot of stations are homogenised. And as always -- your radio is largely state-run and ours is for-profit meaning commercial sales and ratings are everything. Do you have to sit through ten minutes worth of commercials between songs? Hell they speed the songs up so as to say they play X songs per hour or X songs "uninterrupted" by commercials and still play hours of commercials a day. The other source of income is still payola from the labels, so la prensa is pretty much helpless in influencing a playlist. Fuck em -- I listen to the news on NPR and Eklektikos where the guy can and does draw up a cool and different multihour playlist every day and download like mad via WinMX (you Brits definitely prefer KaZaa, it's where I found KaitO)*. At least you have live shows -- your bands have a chance of making it that way. Here to tour is an expensive proposition because of travel costs and bands tend to build up a following in their hometown before they can ever venture out. Think of Aerial Love Feed. They are in NYC which is about as good as it gets. Fucking Americans not one has heard of Muse to the great amazement of the Brits. It was astounding to run down a list of English bands in front of a Yank/Brit audience and watch the Yanks MAYBE recognise Radiohead and Coldplay and NO ONE ELSE. I've been telling everyone in Austin to watch BBC America and TOTP because as bloody awful as it can be, there's the occasional chestnut and you can zap through the whole 22 minutes pretty damn fast if need be. And WTF is up with Polyphonic Spree in England? Do any of you lot actually LIKE that band and why? They leave me feeling like going on a Postal Spree and they're from DALLAS which I absolutely loathe. - --Amy *Download choices influenced by who has something in their share along with other music I like. Most reliable way to find good music and I'll buy the album of a band I want to support. ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 13:05:50 -0500 From: "Henry Biedenkapp" Subject: seven-seas-moderated Re: seven-seas New Music - Sheila Divine I haven't listened to much new music since the Nirvana and NIN explosion, but I've recently discovered Sheila Divine's - "Secret Society" which is totally awesome -- going back to the moody 80's atmosphere. I think it even is much better than the Interpol or Clinic albums. Oddly enough they hailed from Boston, a rare American band that can play Brit 80's music as well as best of the Brits. Their previous material are NOT as good (just typical indie / altermative music). But Secret Society is it. Anybody else have an opinion of this disc? I wanted to comment on The Sheila Divine since I am from Boston as well. They are really so much better now than ever before, they have changed so well. I have seen Aaron Perrino perform solo acoustic many times now also. I would have to say i'm not fond of anything they have done previous to this album. If you get the chance see them live you must go, AND I really mean that, even the new disc is bitterly disappointing if you run out to get it after seeing either The Sheila Divine or Aaron play live. Also they usually cover "The Killing Moon" in their set, in case ya didn't know. HEY!
