I haven't posted in a very long time. However, I've just discovered a great online music retailer out of New Zealand (http://www.smokecds.com). I'm in the USA, and the exchange rate is great, with most CDs going for about $12.50. I ordered 5 CDs, and shipping was only about $11 (US), and the goods arrived in only about 2 weeks after ordering online. Here's the really good part. As I've always really liked NZ bands, i.e., Bats, Chills, etc., I figured that I could probably discover some good new stuff by poking around this site. Sure enough, they even have a NZ bands section, and a lot of discs have sound snippets so you can sample music before you may want to buy. Anyway, the stuff I ordered isn't even available in the USA. I don't believe it can even be ordered by most places here, unless by some quite obscure enterprise perhaps. Here's what I got that I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys good pop/rock music: 1.) PINE - "Long Player" This is simply a fantastic CD. Every single song (there's 13 or 14 of 'em on it I believe) is a 'keeper'. Not a bad track on the entire disc. How often can that be said?? Go to the site, listen to the snippets and make up your own mind. I have to say, though, while sound snippets will give you an idea of what a band is like, in this case, having the real thing and cranking it on the home stereo really makes it hit home! THIS IS THE BEST DISC I'VE HEARD FROM 2002 (IMHO). Get it, you won't be disappointed. Many of these songs should rightly be played on 'alternative radio', but that'll never happen here in the US. This one doesn't exactly hit you over the head on first listen, but with a few repeated listens, it's now ingrained in my noggin' and a disc I feel I'll never stop liking -- sort of like all my Trash Can Sinatras discs ;-) who by the way are slated to finally release a new CD this Spring, probably....yippee! ($12.50 US) 2.) GOLDENHORSE - "Riverhead" This is a very solid, diverse CD. This is one accomplished band. Very good musicians. Very creative arrangements and much talent on display. There's a good female lead singer, and hints of Cocteau Twins, Sundays, Cranberries, Bjork, etc. Styles include hints of ska, dancy vibes, 80s 'new wave', straight forward 'rock', a pacific island sort of vibe, etc. Yet, it all gels together very nicely without any sort of horrible, blatant attempts to do all these things. This is also a very solid disc, no filler, really........and probably about 14-15 songs. I love this disc. I think many of you may enjoy this as well. Once again, having the real thing has totally blown away the online snippets. I was on the fence about ordering this one but I'm so glad I took the chance and did. Many of these songs could be enjoyed by large segments of the listening audience, if they only ever heard them. ($12.50 US) 3.) MARSHMALLOW - "Marshmallow" This guy used to be in the NZ band The Mutton Birds. This is one fine, mellow pop album. Consistently catchy throughout with a real nice vibe. This guy is a talented, clever songwriter, and while it tends to be rather one-dimensional musically, it's interesting enough to keep your attention most of the way through, with some really fine pop gems sprinkled throughout. I really like this one, too, it's already a cherished little pop album......this sort of stuff is hard to find. ($12.50 US) 4.) THE MUTTON BIRDS - "Box of Birds" This is a little box containing The Mutton Birds' first two albums from '92 & '94 (I think)....the self-titled debut, "Mutton Birds", and the sophomore effort, "Salty". I never heard of these guys 'til I started exploring NZ rock/pop. They're very much inline with say, the Bats and the Chills, but a bit darker. There's a wide range of vibes on all these tunes, with some real fast rockin' stuff and slower moodier pieces. All in all, a couple of good CDs. I think I like 'Salty' better though, more consistently upbeat, but getting both for $15.50 US or so made sense instead of getting just one for $12.50. There's a Greatest Hits for The Mutton Birds, but I think the earlier stuff is likely better so that's why I went with this...cool. 5.) THE CORAL - "The Coral" This is the one non-New Zealand release I ordered. It hasn't been issued in the US yet, and ordering the import from the UK would likely set a person back over $20. I got it for $12.50. This is one fucking weird disc. Very sixties. Reminds me a bit of mid-period Alan Bown...which is not a bad thing. That said, the track 'Goodbye' is certainly the best, with a hidden track at the end probably the next best thing. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and proclaim these guys from Liverpool the 2nd coming (as some in the British music press have)...because their just in their awkward infancy right now with this debut CD. It's pretty good but I can see how these guys would be a love 'em or hate 'em affair. I think the lead singer has a good voice and I just wish he'd 'sing' more and do with less shouting/screaming. When he does the songs work a lot better. This is one that has been growing on me more as I listen to it.....so I'm not disappointed I got it. OK, that's the stuff from my New Zealand order. Everyone, check out http://www.smokecds.com it's a nice website and at least for Americans, a great place to get 'off-the-beaten-path' stuff cheap! Weird, a couple of weeks ago I picked up Kula Shakur's 2nd disc, (Pigs & Astronauts? or something like that) for only $1 sealed/new at a local dollar store. I think of these guys as the 90s equivalent of the late 60s Moody Blues (not a bad thing in my book). This one is growing on me as well. For a buck it's a real find...I always was thinking of getting it as I've got their solid debut, glad I waited. There's one song that sounds more Doors than the Doors, too. Ray Manzarek would be proud...the weird Indian vibe on some songs takes some getting used to but it's OK. I ordered Eggstone's unbelievably excellent compilation 'Ca Chauffe en Suede' from CDUniverse a few weeks ago. They only had one so I'm not sure anyone could order this from them now, unless they got more in stock since. I just can't say enough about Eggstone. They're a very mod-pop-ish combo from Sweden. They apparently began the whole Swedish pop assault back in the early 90s, and other bands have eventually followed, i.e., Wannadies, Cardigans, Komeda, etc. (which reminds me I've got a weird CD from a group from Denmark called Sealand Poets.....pretty weird, good stuff from the early 90s). Anyway, this 3-piece Eggstone combo is fucking fantastic...they have a really upbeat, cheery vibe to them. If you're sick of bands moping around, lamenting their lot in life, whining on about BS, then Eggstone is for you. This is a 'summer' band for sure. This approx. 20 song comp is mind-blowing, at least to me. If you like creative, always intriguing upbeat pop, this is a band you should know about. I think I got the disc for like $15.50 US. It is released on a French label (Tricatel - Made in France). Besides, the cover artwork is too cool not to want to buy the disc just for that......LOL. Get it, and when you got it, you'll get it good ;-) Anway, the above is some stuff I'm grooving too now. To my ears all of the above is so much more interesting than the usual suspects like Coldplay I hear about all the time (and whom I'm not impressed with). I WANTED NEW MUSIC - I WAS PROACTIVE IN GOING OUT AND FINDING IT - AND MY LIFE IS SO MUCH RICHER FOR IT. Cheers and have a great 2003! Can't wait for that Trash Cans disc (http://www.trashcansinatras.com). Anyone that doesn't know about this Scottish group is not privy to probably the best band in the last dozen years (and they still are!). These guy's B-sides are better than other group's A-sides...very telling. Yet they can't get signed, what is the world coming to?? - --Boz ====================================== The Official Seven-Seas Web Page. www.bunnymenlist.com ====================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-moderated-digest V2 #16 *****************************************
