I hate it when reviewers tell us how we will feel about a song, all too suggestively, "As the song passes the eight-minute mark, the listeners, too, may find themselves saying "Jesus Christ!" with considerable force" This is what he writes about 'Check The Meaning' which quite a few people I know really like, even ones that don't like Ashcroft and his post Verve stuff. It's also the kind of stuff that happened when Ashcroft released his first solo LP, but as the reviewer says "His solo debut, Alone With Everybody, topped the album chart, despite reviews that described the songs as unmemorable and too long and the lyrics as rubbish." As I said, he proved the critics wrong the last time, not just by the sales, but by the fantastic live shows he did.
